Default Shutting Down

I have installed Windows XP SP2 and now when I try to use
the "Shutdown" feature the computer will not shut down,
I must manually hit the button on my laptop to make it
turn off.

.

SP2 turned off Advanced Power Management. To reenable it..
1)goto control panel, power options
2)in the window that opened.. select the "APM" tab on top.
3)place a check in "Enable Advanced Power Management
Support"

It happen to mine, this corrected it.. Good Luck

Default Shutting Down

Had same problem- poking around, I found that the user in task manager had to
be signed off, think it was rt clk lower task bar, click task manager,
highlight user, and take option to turn it off. Annoyes me to have
unnecessary, administratior, multiple user options etc. which just goober up
the computer for the home where you don't need separate users, administrators
etc.
