Set XP User Accounts to prevent access to certain programs
Hi,
I have Microsoft XP Home Edition. I was wondering if there was any way to prevent the Guest account from having access to certain programs, particularly Internet Explorer (6 with SP2). Since we have cable internet, you don't need a password to get online...I basically want to prevent guest users from having accessing to the Internet without blocking Administrator users' privileges. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks. |

There are a few (unsupported, but then again, MS will never support disabling IE) ways to disable Internet explorer, or its ability to browse internet sites. There are 2 primary ways of disabling internet explorer: 1. Deny access (Group policy? ACLs? Addremove components) to the iexplore.exe executable, or one of its DLLs. OR 2. Set Internet explorer to download from a fake proxy. OR 3. Make your internet connection a dialup one. You can make the broadband connection a dialup style connection (without losing the speed). Just look for PPPoE and RASPPPoE. Even though GPedit/ACLs are not available on Windows XP Home Edition, you can downlaod 3rd party tools to give you their functionality (Doug Knox'a site). -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ oshah [shexec32] Control Panel - System - Advanced - Error Reporting - Choose Programs - Do not report errors for these programs: Acrobat.exe waol.exe ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
