Registry editing in recovery console
Hi,
I'm having this problem with a PC... The problem is, the PC logs off whenever any user tries to log on. This has been happening ever since someone inserted a VCD into the PC, which had some autorun application written to it, just for the sake of preventing it from being copied. My guess is, the application put some values in the system registry in one of the following locations: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon or any other location which would enable the little thing to run. That is why I have to check out the registry, but I'm unable to access it in any way. The system logs off in all the start-up options including the safe mode. So the next logical option is the Recovery Console, and it doesn't allow the REG command. Maybe one of you guys know the fix to this problem... Please tell me if you know. Is it possible to enable the REG command in the Recovery Console? I don't want to reinstall windows each time this occur because I can't get my hands on a genuine copy of Windows XP. The copy which I have turned out to be a pirated copy... and for each installation I have to have a license. Please tell me. Thanks in advance. Shafiee. |

Registry editing in recovery console
Guess there is no way to do that huh....
I tried those methods.... but failed because system restore was disabled on that computer. The computer which I was talking about had genuine copy of windows xp installed. If I reinstall with a non-genuin pirated copy... that will not be right coz I'm going to be supporting software pirates... at the same time making the data in that computer exposed and vulnerable to attack. I won't get updates from microsoft as well. So don't kick me out of this newsgroup ok? It would be so much better if computer vendors supply a restore disk with the PCs. Nowadays, they just supply nothing with the PCs. There are no means of restoring the PC to an operational state, if something like what I mentioned, damages it. And microsoft's recovery console didn't allow me to remove those registry entries which made the pc log off... It will be another week before the pc can be fixed. If only there is a way to edit the registry offline... that way I will be able to fix the problem by attaching the hard disk to another pc. But I guess that is not possible. Thanks anyway for your help guys. See you around. "Ayush" wrote: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 You can use the Manual Steps. -- Ayush [ Be ''?'' Registry editing in recovery console
You cannot edit the registry from the Recovery Console. Try using the
Listsvc and Disable commands. You can mount the disk in another NT type computer and edit the registry from the other Windows installation. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654 John Shafiee wrote: Guess there is no way to do that huh.... If you copy them Reinstall WIndows Paste them back, your Windows should be reactivated if there is no hardware change. Maybe someone will tell you about those files |
