unable to log on to the internet from client computer over the net
okay I'm kinda new to this networking stuff as well as posting to newsgroups
so please bare with me this is probably going to be a long post! any how this is my problem: I have 3 computers networked together and the host computerA) has ICS enabled. It can dial out to my ISP through a dialup connection(this being the shared connection) with no problems and I can browse the net. Now The problem comes up when I try to connect to the internet on any of the 2 client computers(B and C). It happens this way: go into My Network Places(on any of the client computers)-click view network connections- right click on internet gateway Icon- click connect: a little box comes up saying "ISP" on "host" in the title bar then underneith that connecting.... (goto the host while this is occurring and you can hear it dial out to the isp and go through the hand shakes then disconnect) After about 10 or so seconds it says ...connection failed!(on the client computers) And I am unable to log on to the internet. This happens on both client computers the exact same way. Also I cant access the printers on the host computer from the clients. Also as of now I can ping the IP adresses of all the computers on the network from any one of them and get the correct response no problem. also I can browse the shared folders on the network from any of the three computers. In order to browse the internet with a client computer I must manually connect to the internet on (A) first then I am able to browse the internet with (B) and (C) Things that I have tried to do to fix this problem are Run the network setup wizard on each computer starting with the host(verified that ICS was enabled on host)3 times. That didnt solve the problem. Next I disabled Windows firewall on all the connections(LAN and Dialup). That didnt work. Then I disabled Nortons firewall on the host computer. That didnt work. Then I turned to the help and support native to windows and went through all the troubleshooters that I could find that looked like they might apply to my problem. I went all the way through each of them doing what they said to do all the way to the end of each one and guess what....Thats right no resolution! this took about 8 or nine hours of running back and forth between 3 computers to check settings, run tests, adjust settings, run some more tests, adjust some more settings, calling my ISP tech support 3 times to get some information, check and adjust some more settings, run more tests, and run through the troubleshooters again. Still not fixed and extremely frustrated!!!!! so now I come to your newsgroup and spend 5 hours browsing though past posts Seeing alot of things that might work but find nothing...I think that applies specifically to my problem. And I just dont know where to start. This is my setup so that you can get an idea of how things are set up and maybe see where I went wrong: Computer A is running MS windows XP home SP2(Came preinstalled on new Dell Dimension a730n computer) and is the host computer for my network and has ICS enabled. It has 2 NIC's 1 is a dial up modem(Agere Systems PCI Soft modem) The other is a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family FastEthernet NIC(this is the one that I use to connect to the network). As far as the network settings go for this computer go they are as follows: local area connection-properties Connect using: Realtek RTL 8139/810x Family fast This connection uses the following items: Client for microsoft networks File and print sharing for microsoft networks QoS Packet Scheduler Internet Protocal(TCP\IP) all checked TCP/IP Properties Use the following IP Addresses IP Address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: Blank Use the following DNS Addresses: Preferred and Alternate Addresses: Both supplied by my ISP Advanced TCP/IP Settings IP Settings tab: IP Addresses IP Address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateways: none Automatic Metric selected DNS Tab: DNS Server Addresses: Blank For resolution of unqualified names: Append Primary and connection specific DNS Suffixes selected Append Parent Suffixes unchecked DNS suffix for this connection: blank register this connections address's in DNS checked WINS Tab: No WINS addresses entered Enable LMHOSTS Look up checked NetBios setting default selected options tab: optional settings: TCP/IP filtering: not enabled Computer B is a laptop running Microsoft Winds XP Home SP1 With Current updates as far as I know. It is setup as a client without ICS enabled. It has 3 NIC's on it 1 is a dialup modem(GTW V.92 Voice Modem)another is a standard hardwired lan connection(Intel(R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection) this is the connection that I used for the network setup and the last one is a wireless lan card(Orinoco Wireless LAN PC Card)this one not used. As Far as the Settings for this computer they are as follows: local area connection-properties Connect using: Intel(R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection This connection uses the following items: Client for microsoft networks File and print sharing for microsoft networks QoS Packet Scheduler Internet Protocal(TCP\IP) all checked TCP/IP Properties Use the following IP Addresses IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 Use the following DNS Addresses: Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1 Advanced TCP/IP Settings IP Settings tab: IP Addresses IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateways: 192.168.0.1 Metric Automatic Automatic Metric selected DNS Tab: DNS Server Addresses: 192.168.0.1 For resolution of unqualified names: Append Primary and connection specific DNS Suffixes selected Append Parent Suffixes unchecked DNS suffix for this connection: blank register this connections address's in DNS checked WINS Tab: No WINS addresses entered Enable LMHOSTS Look up checked NetBios setting default selected options tab: optional settings: TCP/IP filtering: not enabled Computer C is using Micrsoft Windows XP SP2(Updated Fom SP1 off of the Windows Update site). It is setup as a client with out ICS enabled. It has 2 NIC's on it. 1 is a dialup modem(Compaq Datafax modem. The other is a lan card(VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter)and this is the one that i use to connect to the network. local area connection-properties Connect using: VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter This connection uses the following items: Client for microsoft networks File and print sharing for microsoft networks QoS Packet Scheduler Internet Protocal(TCP\IP) all checked TCP/IP Properties Use the following IP Addresses IP Address: 192.168.0.3 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 Use the following DNS Addresses: Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1 Advanced TCP/IP Settings IP Settings tab: IP Addresses IP Address: 192.168.0.3 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateways: 192.168.0.1 Metric Automatic Automatic Metric selected DNS Tab: DNS Server Addresses: 192.168.0.1 For resolution of unqualified names: Append Primary and connection specific DNS Suffixes selected Append Parent Suffixes checked DNS suffix for this connection: blank register this connections address's in DNS checked WINS Tab: No WINS addresses entered Enable LMHOSTS Look up checked NetBios setting default selected options tab: optional settings: TCP/IP filtering: not enabled Thats it for the setup if I need to add anything please let me know! oh! sorry for such a long post!
