Hearts - computer logic?
I play the Hearts game provided by MS occasionally, and find it an enjoyable
game since the computer plays quite an intelligent game. Until this evening, that is. Dealt the cards, and I passed the Queen of Spades onto East. 1,2,3 First three hands went normally, and I picked up the first Heart played on the third hand. 4 I played a low spade, West dropped the Ace, North dropped a Diamond, and I waited for the Queen of Spades to appear from East. East played the Knave of Spades! 5 West led a low Spade and East took it with the Queen. So why didn't East drop the Queen under the Ace in hand 4, when I had already won a Heart and killed the chance of East "Taking The Moon"? The computer doesn't normally make a mistake like that. (As it turned out, East never stood a chance of "Taking The Moon", since he held most of the low Hearts.) As I said it's quite intelligent at this game, unlike Backgammon which is a complete farce. jim |

But when I play hearts, my strategy is to play all the hearts out as soon as possible. If I have to trump things with a high card, so be it. that's the breaks. I once wrote a game based on a solitaire game written by someone else. with his approval of course. it always screwed up with one card showing up at a certain place. never could figure out why. computers understand only numbers. So when certain numbers add up to do something, it happens that way. |

So when certain numbers add up to do something, it happens that way. My complaint with that game, as well as the one on zone.com, is that the cards are often not distributed properly. Often, if someone plays the 5 of Hearts, the other three players will play the 4, 3 and 2. This happens often enough that it looks like a problem in the program. Even so, the card games from MS are far better than others I have tried to play. |

Even so, the card games from MS are far better than others I have tried to play. The big problem with most card games that have been written is, they cheat. I once bought the MS golf game. They had it so designed so that there was only one way you could play the game. If you aimed the ball to land in a certain spot, there was something that got in your way. IMO, I feel that MS wrote hearts to make you loose. I haven't played it in years, but it was my impression that you got certain cards based on a pattern. I mean like in real life, the chances of you getting the same set of cards over and over is astronomical. I have a match 3 game that has an algorithm in it that keeps you from getting what you want to happen. But you can still beat it, eventually. |
