problems caused by XP updates

I downloaded updates and by cd burner won't recognize a
blank cd and also my computer restarts when I click shut
down. Thanks to Dave for the message "change the
settings so that microsoft default wasn't being used" but
I don't know how to do that. Can anyone help? Thanks
