HP DVD drive won't write DVD's
I bought a new HP1260t DVD RW, and it won't write DVD's. It hasn't from the start. It writes CD's just fine, but I need to start saving files from a video camera, so I need DVD size capacity.
It reads both CD's & DVD's fine. Device Manager shows it as HP DVD Writer 1260t, and says it is working properly. Location is 0. The error shown is "Problem Copying" "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do?" In Driver File Details, these are listed: C:\\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\Afc.sys C:\\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys C:\\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\imapi.sys C:\\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys C:\\WINDOWS\system32\storprop.dll Am I correct in assuming that only the .dll is the driver? Windows XP Pro SP3 Memorex DVD+R I also have a Sony CD-ROM CDU5215 installed (as drive D, and have no problems or conflicts with that). Thanks in advance for any help. :-) |

Thanks in advance for any help. :-) My drivers are cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, storprop.dll. The Afc could be Arcsoft ASPI shell. And that could be a hint why your DVD doesn't work. You have some software installed, which could be fiddling around with the software stack or registry. ******* Using the free Nero InfoTool, I see these tick boxes. This is how I verify my drive is a DVD writer. Imgburn can do this too. http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/8156/dvdgh22.gif ******* There is a fixit for UpperFilter/LowerFilter problems. The fix is careful to only apply it to the responsible GUID. If you do the fix by hand, some people manage to delete the UpperFilter entries for every GUID they can find, and that disables the keyboard. http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd...problems/en-us ******* You can try using imgburn, which is free, and has all sorts of information about an optical drive. It's mainly oriented towards converting an image file into a CD. The built-in WinXP burning capability, allows drag and drop of files. WinXP didn't start with a capability for doing that to DVD drives. And then, a third party tool would be a common solution. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imgburn Imgburn Mode : Discovery Tools : Drive : Capabilities Tools : Drive : Check For Firmware Updates The latter option isn't likely to work for you, but that's just an example of some of the things it can help with. The issue could be an UpperFilter placed by Arcsoft, or it could be the ASPI driver that is somehow responsible. Generally, burning tools provide their own ASPI, if it is needed. At one time, people would spend hours working on that, but that has never seemed to be an issue on WinXP here for me. So I'll have to assume it's a "do not touch" issue. You can try uninstalling Arcsoft, if that is what put the Afc file there. I would not try removing it by hand. If you can find the Afc file on your C: drive, and do "Properties", you may be able to determine the provider of the file, and see whether it's Arcsoft or not. Arcsoft makes many software products, so I can't guess right off hand which one it would be. Paul |

HP DVD drive won't write DVD's
Thanks, Paul.
The Arcsoft software was indeed put there when I ran the installation CD for my Toshiba HD camcorder. Both the DVD writer & the camera were purchased & installed around the same time. I've noticed that mp4's taken by the Toshiba camera don't seem to be recognized by Windows Movie Maker, so maybe there's something propietary going on. Dunno. I'll try uninstalling Arcsoft. Thanks again! :-) |
