Yeh, Oops, I'm in a bit of a prediciment,

I'm borrowing a friends laptop, A Dell, Stupid stupid me, I've gone and
dropped it off my desk,

It turned off, so I turned it back on, and the dreaded "No bootable
devices Strike f1 to retry or f2 for setup" or somthing similar.

I'm screwed, Retrying just brings it back up over again, What do I need
to do? Is it just possible somthings come dis-connected?

Please Help,

Anyway - sympathies.

HDDs don't like mechanical shock so it's possible you've broken it. It's
also possible that it just needs re-seating, have you tried that? Can you
hear it trying to work? Failing that it's probably time for a new HDD and
restore from the most recent backup image.

Please Help,

Unfortunately - chances are you have broken the laptop. No matter if you
knocked a cable loose or crashed the hard disk drive or cracked/ruined
something else- it is broken.

Given it is a laptop and you are asking such questions, you would be doing
your friend a further disservice if you attempted to repair it yourself. It
should be repaired by someone qualified - and if under warranty - by Dell.

See if it is under warranty. Find the Dell Service Tag (should be on a
sticker on the laptop bottom) and use that he
http://support.dell.com/support/topi...gen&~ck=anavml
(in the obvious place to type in the service tag.)

This way you will know if the Dell is under warranty or not.

If it is - call Dell and let them know what happned. Call your friend and
let them know what happened and what you have started in order to remedy the
situation.

If it isn't, call your friend and see what they would like you to do. It's
your bad - so expect/offer to pay.

Are you suggesting that someone who has claimed no experience (and asked
questions inferring no experience) should open a laptop and try to repair
it? Do you know whether or not the laptop is under Dell's warranty and such
an act would make matters worse?

My suggestion is to check the warranty status first:

See if it is under warranty. Find the Dell Service Tag (should be on a
sticker on the laptop bottom) and use that he
http://support.dell.com/support/topi...gen&~ck=anavml

Did I say to open the case? No. The laptops I have have a HDD module that
is user-removable, their's might also and the shock might have uncoupled it,
so they might try re-seating it. That's what I was *implying* - I can't
*infer* something in something that I write. I can *imply* it, the reader
can infer anything they like, as clearly you did.

Try contacting dell? This problem has nothing to do with XP after all
so is out of place here.
