W1909 64 bit / Problem with Search
After Update to 1909, I normally can change every file name without problems
as it was in the past. However, if I use Search and if I then try to change the found file name, it becomes strange. I then can shorten the file name, but I can't rename the file. I only get a System beep. I have read that MS intended to change the search in 1909. On the other hand, I read that MS has redrawn the feature only some days before they distributed the update. They had found a problem in the routine. So the question is: Do I have a changed search on my machine or not? If so, is there a fix out? Juergen |

A different limit than a regular File Explorer window (260 characters). You might run into this when renaming MP3 files. https://superuser.com/questions/4100...results-window And the bug has been there since Windows 7. I tried it, and I cannot lengthen an edited string past the suggested limit in that article (perhaps 128 characters). Whereas if I select "rename" and edit in File Explorer, I can make the filename even longer. If I make the filename short enough, I can change the name while in the (Search result format) window. If I want to make the filename even longer, I have to open the folder with the file in it, and edit it there. ******* By setting some registry key, the NTFS file system limit can be modified to a path length of something like 64K. But if you do that, any reparse point descents, will take longer to resolve with "Path too long" - selecting that option could have occasional side effects during file system traversal. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html I only mention this, in case you were a tester, and wanted to see what happens when that option is enabled, and you wanted to test editing in the (search result format) window. I don't expect the result would change, because it's possible the manifest doesn't have longPathAwaretrue/longPathAware. The long path capability, is in the canonical Microsoft web page on namespaces, but in older OSes, the capability never seemed to work. The claim was, the capability was buried in the file system. But code for presenting visual output for such abominations didn't exist. If you wanted to rename a file with that feature turned on, write some Perl code and do it there :-) That's where I did some previous path length testing. Because Perl could get around a bug in File Explorer (Perl could make a filename with a length, that File Explorer refused to edit - but that bug was fixed when Win10 came along). Paul |

Probably not a problem in voidtools' [Search] Everything tool. https://www.voidtools.com/ No, not a fix to Microsoft's search function, but the always solution to Windows by going to 3rd party software. |
