"Choose the programs that Windows uses by default"
This is about being able to access the "Custom" section in "Set program
access and computer defaults". After the Fall Creator's Update, 1709, this ability went away, and we were instead forced to use the new and 'improved' Windows 10 "Default apps" settings. But, there was a way to get back to the old way of doing things, to get back to the "Custom" section in "Set program access and computer defaults", by using a CLSID. I need this to set my default email client. The new Windows 10 Default apps window wouldn't do it. There was a list of CSLIDs that worked, he https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...-open-control- panel-items-windows-10-a.html Now, after version 1803, I need again to reset my default email client (because 1803 un-did it, which I just noticed on this rarely used laptop) but the CSLIDs no longer work. The "send page by email" and "send link by email" became greyed out again, and I tried using the CSLID that worked right after 1709 broke the link to the "Custom" section in "Set program access and computer defaults", but it no longer worked. This explained it: https://community.spiceworks.com/can.../2-windows-10- fall-creator-s-update-where-my-default-program-settings-at I was able to fix this with a registry hack. I was wondering if anyone knows how to get back to the contents of the old "Choose the programs that Windows uses by defamlt": Set your defailt programs Associate a file type or protocol with a progra Change AutoPlay settings Set program access and computer defaults Thanks, Boris |

Category would give a slightly different set of choices which I won't be attempting to address. Depending on your Windows 10 build, there may be more than one answer. Until recently, the simple answer was to start Control Panel and then select "Default Programs". There you would make a selection from three of the four options that you list above and proceed from there. A recent Windows 10 build changed this procedure to the following: After you select one of the following options: Set your default programs Associate a file type or protocol with a program Set program access and computer defaults you will be taken to "Default apps" in the Settings panel. In "Default apps" you are invited to choose your default applications. The first of these is "Email". The default app for my PC is Thunderbird. If I wanted to change this to a different app, I could left click "Thunderbird" and then choose an app from the dropdown list. I could have chosen the option of going to "Settings" then "Apps" and then select "Default apps". I accept that finding the right path can be challenging; but then the old ways are being replaced by new ways. (When was the last time you used a crank handle to start your car ?) Have fun, |

Have fun, Hi, Monty. I appreciate the reply. Setting Control Panel to Category, or Icons, gives the same results when then clicking on Default Programs, as you know. I am taken to this selection: 1)Set your default programs 2)Associate a file type or protocol with a program 3)Change AutoPlay settings 4)Set program access and computer defaults And then clicking on 4 sends me to the Windows 10 "Default apps" screen, and that's not where I want to go. I want to click on 4 and then be able to go to the old "Custom", but I can't get there that way. Why do I want to go to Custom? Because for the last two 'Feature updates', although I can successfully select my default mail app in Default apps, Windows Live Mail, the 'Send link by e-mail', is still greyed out in IE 11. Only going to "Custom" and selecting Windows Live Mail as my default email program has activated the link in the past, and now Custom is unavailable. Even if I go into 'Set defaults by app', and select Windows Live Mail Manage, and set .eml, .vcf, and MAILTO, the 'Send link by e-mail' is still greyed out. (BTW, rolling through all the file types in 'Choose default apps by file type' is nuts. There should be a 'search' function.) The only way I was able to get the 'Send link by e-mail' activated is by messing with the registry. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail and set the (Default) value to Windows Live Mail. Previously, the (Default) was (value not set), even though Windows Live Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, Windows Mail, and Hotmail were available in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail subkey. Funny thing now is that no matter what I change the default value to, or even delete it, Windows Live Mail still launches when I 'Send link by e- mail'. And, the changes I make in the registry are not reflected in any of the Default apps settings (after a reboot, of course). For instance, if I change the registry to make Windows Mail the default mail client, Windows Live Mail still shows up in all the Default apps windows/settings, and Windows Live Mail is still launched from IE 11. Wonder what the next Feature update will bring. |

There may be a hint for you in this article. https://preview.tinyurl.com/zkkaa9c May be the fact that your email program has NOT been updated since 2012 might be a clue that compatability with other programs may be being 'sacrificed' over a period of time and it is time for a rethink of your requirements.
