No, it means he has a digital camera with him. The camera could be part
of a mobile phone or it could be a separate device.

And since he said that's what he does, it's clear that he has such a
device (probably a mobile phone with a camera rather than a stand-alone
camera, since it's in a supermarket). No assumption is necessary.

And by the way, not all mobile phones have digital cameras built into them.

these days, almost all do, and one of the key functions people look for
in a phone.
