David,

you can ignore this warning of Firefox and continue.

Thanks, Michael. Some years ago I spent many hours trying to get Pan
to work satisfactorily on my iMac - and I couldn't do it. :-(

Thunderbird and SeaMonkey work fairly well for me.

I'm writing this with "Claws Mail" on MX 19. I like it more than Pan.
It has a keep function for usenet messages and better ways of sorting,
a better list for all usenet groups to choose from.

But I will stick to Windows for most of the things I have to do on a
PC, which means I will stick with my old Thunderbird and old Agent.

Regards

M.

There were warnings from Safari and Chrome too ......

But I looked anyway! ;-)

I've looked here briefly https://mxlinux.org/mx19-features/

Perhaps I'll have a play one day when it's raining! ;-)

no it hasn't.

Pretty much it has.

no, it definitely hasn't.

linus ix mostly used in servers and embedded devices, *not* the desktop
or pocket.

linux on the desktop is 1% share. for mobile, it's either android or
ios. android has a stripped down kernel with android on top and ios
does not have any linux whatsoever (although does use a significant
amount of open source components).

https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share

android is not a full linux distro. it's the linux kernel, with
android built on top of it. all apps are written to android apis,
not linux.

LINUX itself IS ONLY the kernel.

when people say linux, they mean the full install, not just the kernel,
which is useless without anything else.

android uses a stripped down linux kernel since quite a bit of it is
not relevant for a mobile device or android itself.

Android is just as much a linux distro
as redhat, slack, debian, mint, etc are.

android is in no way a linux distro like redhat etc.

note that android is listed separately in the link above, not lumped
into linux.

It is just Linux with a different desktop :-P

linux on the desktop currently has a very low single digit percentage
market share. that is not 'taking over the world'.

We don't need the desktop if we have all the rest :-P

for servers and embedded devices, it's quite common, however.

if it's unknown, how can it be listed as having a share?

The fruit is not Macintosh... it is McIntosh. Apple spelled it that way
because another company was already spelling it correctly.

no, it simply means it's something other than android, ios, macos,
windows or linux.

they don't have a category for chrome os, so it might include that, or
that might be lumped in with linux.

it could also be a custom build of the usual suspects that didn't

in any event, it's small.

that company was https://www.mcintoshlabs.com, who is known for audio
equipment that uses vacuum tubes/valves.

apple later licensed the trademark and eventually bought it outright.

Probably it is what psychologists call " Self-fulfilling prophecy "
on your part so I suggest take this crap to your Linux Junk
newsgroup as Windows has what you call some sort of font bug.

Surely, you don't want to hang out with Windows users who have some
sort of bug as you have managed to diagnose them from your basement
apartment window.

The funny part is he is using slrn which is a throwback to the
1970's and a DEC VT100 terminal.
Every option, including colors, are controlled by a text
configuration file .slrnrc.

Guess what. I find article navigation clunky and slow with GUI
newsreader ... with keyboard I am much faster and don't waste time on
clicks...

So if you want to change the color of the text for example you need
to edit the file and add something like CYAN to it, then save,
restart slrn, rinse and repeat 100 times until you find a
combination you like.

So what? How many times you change color of text?

Also slrn needs a helper application like slrnpull or leafnode to
read offline. Otherwise it downloads one article at a time as you
read them.

That's much better with broadband internet.

Very slow, especially considering it's a cli application.

Bull****.

Linux worshipers wear slrn like some badge of intelligence because
they were able to configure and use it. Doesn't matter that it's a
God awful program still left in the 70's, the complexity, especially
when coupled with the editor vi or emacs makes them feel superior.

Guess what, with vim and slrn I am much faster.
