That's *just one* definition, among a lot others not yet written into that webpage? Any stand from the UK Government? What have they got to do with it? |

Big Ben is the name of the Bell, not the clock (believe) Isn't Big Ben referring to the *WHOLE* clock tower? How could you have time with just the clock face but without the gears inside the tower? No, everyone thinks it's the tower but it the name of the great bell. The tower is the Elizabeth tower after being renamed for the diamond jubilee. It used to just be called the clock tower, of the Palace of Westminster. -- Faster, cheaper, quieter than HS2 and built in 5 years; UKUltraspeed http://www.500kmh.com/ |

How could you have time with just the clock face but without the gears inside the tower? The bell that rings the time is actually what ic called Big Ben. Over time the term has come to meanĀ* the bell, the clock, and the tower in the popular vernacular. Do you have the origin of this saying, as for example, heard from old people? The largest bell is most probably named after Benjamin Hall who oversaw its installation. |
