Default Thunderbird and Archiving

I've been to the Thunderbird forums. No help there.

On both of my Windows 10 laptops, 16299.192, running Thunderbird 52.6.0
32-bit, I'm having trouble with the archive function. I can only archive
one post during each session. If I press 'archive', the post is archived
(in the proper year's archive folder. If I then hover over any folder in
the All Folders panel, my cursor hourglasses forever, until I move back
to the list or reading pane. If I try to archive another post, when I
press archive, nothing happens. I have to shut down Thunderbird and
restart to archive again.

By the way, on one laptop, I get the hourglass, on the other I get the
blue spinning circle.

What's up?

Even though they're not meant to propagate, I think the mozilla.* groups
are visible on some other servers, but if you post to them without
connecting to the actuall news.mozilla.org server, the posts silently go
into a blackhole, I wonder if the O/P has suffered from that?

If your are accessing your mail via IMAP and you have really crappy
Internet service such as satellite with incredible latency the issue is
your service not Thunderbird.

Yes, I've tried both the forums and news.mozilla.org. Nothing there.
That's why I came here, even though it's 'OT' for this subject.

I don't normally use the archive facility (except for stray mouse
clicks) but I just archived two messages, one by one, without a problem.

High speed internet with Comcast.

Yeah, I'm sure it's just me. I've tried a folder repair, but no joy. I
hate to have to uninstall and re-install, but I may have to try that
route. It's just odd that I can't properly archive on two Windows 10
machines. Righ now, if I want to archive, I turn to Xnews, which I've
been using for 15-plus years.

I reproduced the symptoms here.

Using a Win10 x32 VM and TB 52.6.0 x32, an attempt
to select the "archive" function for a posting, the first
one does seem to move into the archive structure (into the
2018 folder), but the busy cursor is present any time the cursor
is placed over the upper right pane.

Using Process Explorer, there is some routine with "NT" and
"Unmap" in the name running, which is perhaps memory mapped
I/O. Like it is trying to release the file in the archive
folder or something. And it seems "stuck".

But there's nothing from that which hints at a solution.

The files involved are tiny, so it's not a "large file problem".

And if the operation I did was "illegal", there's no hint or
feedback in the interface to say I can't do that (archive
a newsgroup post).

As for the overall design, Thunderbird is a busy busy pile of
steaming crap. It never seems to settle down, like it was
running its own private fidget spinner. The version I use
doesn't behave like that! I really don't know what these
people were smokin, who changed this software. What school
of software design, says software has to work like this ?
Because it's so "busy" playing with itself, I can't really
safely draw any conclusions while debugging it. It would
be like debugging flight control software for something,
while an object was in-flight. I need software where the
inputs I make with the mouse, have a one to one relationship
with a software response. So when I see some thread running
in Process Explorer, I know it's a result of my input,
and not some fidgeting the software is doing on its own.

I guess I should have also said that I'm not talking about email. It's
my NNTP that's won't let me archive correctly. Email will let me archive
all I want. But, when I try to archive a newsgroup post, I can only
archive one. If I try to archive another, nothing happens. Noting. I
have to relaunch Thunderbird to archive another NNTP post. And, then I
can only archive one more, and have to relaunch again.

Okay, isn't NNTP is a little like IMAP where the messages are really on
the server? NNTP servers tend to be limited in bandwidth and run on a
shoestring. I think if you want to speed up archiving wouldn't setting
the NG for offline use help? That way the message would already be local
and moving to archive folders would preform more like POP mail?

Account Settings NG Synchronization & Storage Message
Synchronizing Select newsgroups for offline use...

Archive seems to do nothing at all on a news account here ...

I just retrieved all messages from the past 30 days in
mozilla.support.thunderbird. Not one posting from 'Boris'. Did you use
another nick perhaps? Because if you didn't your posting(s) didn't come
through.

Did you import a profile from a previous version ?

That's what I did in my test, as "starting materials".
I wasn't going to set up accounts by hand for this.
