Default Network Connection Issue (File Sharing)

I am having a strange problem involving two Pentium 4
computers each running Windows XP Home version, SP2, a
Microsoft MN700 802.11g Wireless Router, a Cable Modem,
and a Sound Blaster Wireless Music device. Each computer
also runs Norton Internet Security 2004 (with Norton
Antivirus 2004) and each have been recently scanned with
Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and are "Clean".

The cable modem is connected to the router (wired), the
router is connected to computer "A" (wired).
Computer "B" and the Sound Blaster device each connect
wirelessly to the router. The router is running
in "mixed compatibility mode" since the SoundBlaster is
an 802.11b device, but the adapter at Computer "B" is a
Lynksys 802.11g device.

The router sees all the devices just as it should with
separate IP addresses. That is, all devices show up in
the router's Management Tool correctly named and with
unique DHCP assigned IP addresses. Each wireless network
device is correctly configured for the right SSID, WEP
key, channel, etc. Wireless music device receives media
and plays just fine. When I am on either computer "A"
or "B", I can read e-mail, and surf the Internet just
fine. Adapter at computer "B" shows "Excellent"
connection at 54Mps. Bottom line is I seem to have full
connectivity to the router for each device/location.

My problem: I cannot see a "Workgroup" or shared files
from either computer in My Network Places, even though I
have "Microsoft File and Print Sharing" service running
on each network device at each computer, and have shared
folders at each location. I have checked the name of
each computer to make sure they are different, and that
the "workgroup" name is the same. I have read
Microsoft's recent articles on "Troubleshooting File and
Printer Sharing on Microsoft Windows XP" at:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=fd7fd48d-6b4a-448e-a632-
076f98a351a2&displaylang=en and "Troubleshooting
Internet Connection firewall (ICF) on Microsoft Windows
XP" at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=b3d01193-ad93-492f-b74b-
97c2fc44e08b&DisplayLang=en. Both very informative
articles, but neither solved my problem. They seem to
focus on Windows/Internet connection firewall as maybe
causing an issue, but I should point out that I am not
even running ICF. In Security Monitor, I have turned ICF
off and choose "I have a third party firewall that I will
monitor myself" (and yes, I have turned Norton Internet
Security off as well to see if that was causing the
problem).

I can successfully ping the router from each computer, I
can successfully ping internet IP addresses and named
internet addresses from either computer. I CANNOT ping
computer "B" from computer "A" and vice versa. Just for
kicks, I did add the NetBIOS protocol at each computer,
and got mixed results. Computer "A" could the see
Computer "B and its shared files, but Computer "B" still
could not see Computer "A" in My Network Places.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the router at
computer "A", the wireless adapter at computer "B", "File
and Print Sharing on Microsoft Networks" on both
computers several times, and have also un-shared and re-
shared files on each computer several times.
Installations occur without event, but still the same end
result.

I am very sorry this is such a huge post, but I wanted to
clarify previous posts and actions taken to date. I am
posting in microsoft.public.broadbandnet.hardware and in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web, since I have the
MN700 router and am not sure if that is the problem. If
neither is the right newsgroup please let me know.

I got the same error on computer "B" when I tried to run

I also had the following erro in "System" under Event

DCOM Error: The application-specific permission settings

application with CLSID
{D851F103-8C90-4321-AFF0-58BA5BD421C2}

security permission can be modified using the Component
Services administrative tool.

I look in Administrative Tools under "Services and did
not that "Server" and "Workstation" for both computers is
started and set for automatic. I also noted that there
is no TCP/IP filtering set for either network device.

Fred,

The first thing you need to do is get rid of IPV6 on both computers. Reboot
after un install. Then rerun "ipconfig /all c:\ipconfig.txt" and repost with
new ipconfig.txt files.

Are you actually accessing websites in the IPV6 address space? If so, we'll
figure out how to get IPV6 working, properly, after you get (IPV4) file sharing
working.

Cheers,

Chuck,

Ok I deleted the IPv6 protocal from both computers (no,
I wasn't using it - it just loaded with the lynksys

computer "A" hoping it would help).

Fred,

The first thing you need to do is get rid of IPV6 on

both computers. Reboot
after un install. Then rerun "ipconfig /all
c:\ipconfig.txt" and repost with
new ipconfig.txt files.

Are you actually accessing websites in the IPV6 address

space? If so, we'll
figure out how to get IPV6 working, properly, after you

get (IPV4) file sharing
working.

Fred,

OK, that looks much better.

Now, do you have the following enabled on both computers:
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
- NetBIOS Over TCP/IP

Do both computers still have connectivity?

From each computer, test shares visibility. In a command window, run "net view
@target", substituting for @target:
1) This computer name.
2) This computer IP address.
3) Other computer name.
4) Other computer IP address.
Report visibility of shares / exact error displayed in each test (8 tests

Default Network Connection Issue (File Sharing)

Chuck,

I think I have solved my problem. I had told you that I
had disabled Norton Firewall as I tried to troubleshoot
my prblem. While awaiting your last post, I saw another
post that said disableing Norton does not really work,
and that you had to uninstall it. Well I did not
unistall, but that did lead me to look long and hard at
the Firewall's configuration settings. I found several
things, including that it was set to block file
sharing, and was set to block ICMP requests. Finally,
even though I ran it's networking wizard, Norton failed
to add ny subnet to trusted computers.

Iam ahsame3d and embarrassed that I trusted Norton's
wizzard and did not previously explore this. I now have
full file and print sharing capability, and can
sucessfully ping each computer from each other, etc.

Thanks for yor time and effort in helping me trouble
shoot this problem.

Fred,

It's amazing how many times a misconfigured personal firewall contributes to a
problem like this. And many times, I'll have to provide two or three rounds of
diagnoses like what you were going thru, before the person being helped will
accept that MAYBE the PF needs to be un installed, or reconfigured.

You figured it out in the second round. Without prompting. That deserves a pat
on the back. Not embarrassment.

Thanks for the feedback.

Please:

How do I set up my computer so that I can download music from the internet?
Sp2 is not letting me do this. Also, how can I uninstall sp2? Thanks a lot.

I am having a strange problem involving two Pentium 4

Microsoft MN700 802.11g Wireless Router, a Cable Modem,
and a Sound Blaster Wireless Music device. Each

computer
also runs Norton Internet Security 2004 (with Norton
Antivirus 2004) and each have been recently scanned

with
Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D and are "Clean".

Each wireless

network
device is correctly configured for the right SSID, WEP
key, channel, etc. Wireless music device receives

media
and plays just fine. When I am on either computer "A"
or "B", I can read e-mail, and surf the Internet just
fine. Adapter at computer "B" shows "Excellent"
connection at 54Mps. Bottom line is I seem to have

full
connectivity to the router for each device/location.

My problem: I cannot see a "Workgroup" or shared files
from either computer in My Network Places, even though

I
have "Microsoft File and Print Sharing" service running
on each network device at each computer, and have

shared
folders at each location. I have checked the name of
each computer to make sure they are different, and that
the "workgroup" name is the same. I have read
Microsoft's recent articles on "Troubleshooting File

and
Printer Sharing on Microsoft Windows XP" at:
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=fd7fd48d-6b4a-448e-a632-
076f98a351a2&displaylang=en and "Troubleshooting
Internet Connection firewall (ICF) on Microsoft Windows
XP" at: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?
FamilyID=b3d01193-ad93-492f-b74b-
97c2fc44e08b&DisplayLang=en. Both very informative
articles, but neither solved my problem. They seem to
focus on Windows/Internet connection firewall as maybe
causing an issue, but I should point out that I am not
even running ICF. In Security Monitor, I have turned

ICF
off and choose "I have a third party firewall that I

will
monitor myself" (and yes, I have turned Norton Internet
Security off as well to see if that was causing the
problem).

I can successfully ping the router from each computer,

I
can successfully ping internet IP addresses and named
internet addresses from either computer. I CANNOT ping
computer "B" from computer "A" and vice versa. Just

for
kicks, I did add the NetBIOS protocol at each computer,
and got mixed results. Computer "A" could the see
Computer "B and its shared files, but Computer "B"

still
could not see Computer "A" in My Network Places.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the router at
computer "A", the wireless adapter at

computer "B", "File
and Print Sharing on Microsoft Networks" on both
computers several times, and have also un-shared and re-
shared files on each computer several times.
Installations occur without event, but still the same

end
result.

I am very sorry this is such a huge post, but I wanted

to
clarify previous posts and actions taken to date. I am
posting in microsoft.public.broadbandnet.hardware and

in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web, since I have

the
MN700 router and am not sure if that is the problem.

If
neither is the right newsgroup please let me know.

Fred,

I'm suspecting several possible problems here. The

simplest might be reflected
in the ipconfig for the computers.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all
c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste

into your next post.

Please provide adhoc browser view for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "net view c:\netview.txt"

into the command window -
Open c:\netview.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your

next post.

Norton Internet Security, like other personal firewalls,

is known to cause
problems with file sharing. Disabling it does not

always solve the problem.
You might be better off re enabling it, and designating

the other computers as
trusted. Other than properly configuring it, some folks

have reported relief by
un installing NIS and NAV, totally, using all Symantec

un install procedures.

Let's start with ipconfig and net view, then move

forward after we have your
pinging working.

Cheers,
Chuck
