How to convert DVD vob files to a mpeg 2 file?

It's that size because they show you how to do it using lots of different
programs. Just pick the section most relevant to you... One of the
simplest method is to use a program called Vidomi which will take your VOB's
and give you an AVI, once you've configured all the options... Again, there
should be a guide for this on that site, as well as download links.

Personally, I use DVD2AVI myself as Vidomi, although good, is really aimed
at the beginner... You'll get much better results doing it the long and
complicated way.

No one ever said doing this is easy...

you want to store it on CD, then I would recommend either DiVX or XViD.

the two, I find XViD gives slightly better results. If you want it to

playable in a DVD player, then you should use MPEG1 or MPEG2 format

To be honest, with TMPGEnc at it's highest quality settings, you
won't
visibly lose any quality... I regularly do it and can very rarely
tell
the
difference, and even then only on a good quality monitor...
certainly
not
on
a TV!
