Default Battery draining power in few seconds

Hello crowd, I've this recent problem with my laptop's battery which is if I
turn on the power in battery mode, the system boots up and immediately
hibernates because battery only holds power for a few seconds. I think this
system update issue because battery is old but it used to last about half
hour. The icon on tray is looking different too (That's why I suspect this
is an updating issue). Do you know a way to solve this besides buying a new
laptop or doing a fresh installation of system?

Thanks.

It used to last half an hour because the battery was dying. It is now dead.
Replace it.

Unless, of course, the charging circuit is no longer working.

I had a similar problem. I replaced my laptop's battery.

Laptop batteries have a finite life, equivalent to about 1,000 full
charges. No need to replace the entire laptop when only the battery
needs replacing. If the battery itself is worn out (like mine was),
then it will not be fixed by doing a fresh installation of the system.

Boot an alternative OS and see if the battery subsystem
responds in a similar way ?

I thought that, maybe if I ran Linux portable I will find battery still
works a little bit. The question would be how to get around this issue. It's
not very dramatic because I use wall plug but can't move the laptop.

If you boot the laptop while it is connected to the mains, what does the
battery icon in the system tray look like? Does it show empty (open
rectangle) or charged (filled rectangle), or does it show the rectangle
gradually going from unfilled to filled? When the mouse hovers over the
icon, does the tooltip shown a % charged? Assuming the icon is a filled
rectangle, try unplugging the mains adaptor and see whether the tooltop then
gives an estimate of time remaining. If the battery discharges and turns the
laptop off within a few seconds, I say the same as everyone else: buy a new
battery.

If the battery icon never shows a filled rectangle no matter how long you
leave it charging, then the charging circuit may be broken in which case you
will need a new laptop (or an expensive repair).

As a matter of interest, before this happened, did you tend to leave the
laptop permanently on charge when you weren't using it, or did you unplug
once the battery was fully charged and/or when you shut the laptop down. And
did you usually use the laptop only on mains power or did you let the
battery discharge sometimes to "give it some exercise"?

Hi, Gary.

As the others said, you probably need a new battery.

But...I've had this problem with both my Netbook and my cellphone and they
both recovered, at least for now. For both, the process was the same.

Run the battery COMPLETELY dead. No lights for "Power On" or anything else.
With the battery installed, run it down as far as possible. If the device
automatically shuts down after a while, turn it on again. For my cellphone,
I pushed and held the button to turn it completely off, then I physically
removed the battery for several minutes to be sure. When you are sure it is
DEAD dead...

Insert the battery and turn it on again. It has worked more than once for
me. ;) Good luck!
