(I'm suspecting the answer is No, since there's no specific installer for them, but I figure it can't hurt to ask.) The answer is *yes*! You can get the old solitaire and other games back. See http://www.howtogeek.com/122145/what...-in-windows-8/ Also see http://winaero.com/blog/get-windows-...or-windows-10/ This was written for the new Windows 10, but it also applies to Windows 8.0/8.1 Thanks for posting. I reported this afternoon that, googling as I should have done before posting, I found both of the howtogeek article. Unfortunately, as I reported a few minutes ago, neither solution given there worked. For the second one, I started a download, but there wasn't a straightforward link to click, and I got nervous about dodgy software from an unknown source. The file was at one of those sites that delivers a few KB per second and really exists to sell downloads. When I'm back at work I may try downloading it into a Windows 8 virtual machine and see what happens. -- Stan Brown, Oak Road Systems, Tompkins County, New York, USA http://BrownMath.com/ http://OakRoadSystems.com/ Shikata ga nai... |

The byte sequence in the Howtogeek article doesn't occur in FreeCell.exe. And the patcher did locate the files, but it edited only FreeCell.exe, and after the edit FreeCell still wouldn't run in Windows 8.1. Howtogeek is usually better than that. When using a patcher, the "from" and the "to" matter. The patcher was likely invented for a particular combination of source OS and destination OS. In case it hasn't been mentioned, don't forget to try compatibility
properties. I have to use the display scaling property for some things but that's probably not applicable. |

I can't say with 100% certainty that copying from Win 7 works as I don't have Win 7 but I CAN say with 100% certainty that copying from WinXP does. The was once a patcher program out to modify a key spot in the exe files so they thought they could run on a later version of windows than 7. Code is code. I get something like this. Directory of C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Solitaire 11/21/2014 06:42 PM dir en-US 11/21/2014 06:42 PM 6,214,144 CardGames.dll 11/21/2014 06:42 PM 863,744 Solitaire.exe 11/21/2014 06:42 PM 23,491 SolitaireMCE.png 3 File(s) 7,101,379 bytes Good grief!! Mine has 408 KB...352 for cards.dll and 56 for sol.exe. It would seem that you have a ton of superfluous bytes. If you have the XP version that might be why. Win 7 may have bloated the program? But now that you say it, I'm going to look. I've got an old win7 and win XP machine hanging around. |

Recently I bought a new laptop, which came with Windows 8.1. There don't seem to be any games on it, not even the ones that came with Windows 7. Am I missing something? (I'm suspecting the answer is No, since there's no specific installer for them, but I figure it can't hurt to ask.) I've tried to move mine, but "good" old MS, took car of that (I suppose to get one to use the on-line games?) --- there are unknown (to the user) files needed for the games. I've never been able to identify them. So, unless there is a way to identify the function calls of a program, we're left without the games. |

In message , Keith Nuttle writes If you want games for Windows 8.1 about the only way to get them is to go to the Windows Store. This is not an ideal solutions as many of the games come packed with advertising. I have downloaded the Klondike Solitaire Collect. It is a quite nice version with several layouts. The card backs are the traditional card backs and the cards are of a nice size. While it comes with advertising, it is easily defeated by turning off your LAN connection before you start the game. I am still looking for a good Mahjong game. Well, I've installed the W7 games in W10, using a W8 method. Not sure what I used, but I found it by googling. Might have been something like http://winaero.com/blog/get-windows-...or-windows-10/ We had a customer just last week wanting this done. I followed a lot of links from this site and a couple others. All had been pulled, couldn't be found, violated terms of service, etc. Found a forum entry that noted that in some jurisdictions, doing this is illegal. The post was not specific as to where it's illegal, but wouldn't be surprise the US is one of them. Needless to say, we didn't do it. :-) Customer was happy with that. -- Ken Mac OS X 10.8.5 Firefox 36.0.4 Thunderbird 31.5 "My brain is like lightning, a quick flash and it's gone!" |

I did complete the download from Ken's link quoted above, unzipped the file, and ran malware scans. It passes as clean. I installed on a Windows 8 VM, and the games I care about (FreeCell, Mahjong Titans, and of course Solitaire) played just fine.
