Default Making a PDF from a MS Word file

About a week ago, I made a file in Wordpad and posted on here about it,
whereas I had to take it to the local library to have the librarian fix
it in MS Word, to make it printable.

At the time I was not aware that I have MS Word installed on a computer
I bought at a garage sale, which came with MS Office Word 2003 installed
in XP Sp3. I had planned to wipe the drive, since I dont like using
someone else's install of any OS. However, aside from a Google toolbar
(Chrome is installed), I did not find anything on there other than
programs and a few pictures of the former owner of this computer. I've
decided to just leave it as-is, so I can use MS Office, which is a legal
copy.

OK, so I took my .RTF file, opened it in MS Word, and did a slight
modification due to an error in the original (my fault). I saved it as
both a RTF and a .DOC. I clicked on "Print" (I dont have a printer),
but to check if it would fit on the page. I discovered that I have a
thing called "PDF Creator". I tried to use it, and got an error message.
I had used the .RTF as input. I tried to use it with the .DOC input. I
have tried this using different settings, and none will make the .PDF
file. It now says I have *6 documents waiting*. First off, how to I get
rid of all of these "Waiting" things, and start over?

Is "PDF Creator" part of MS Word? Why is it refusing to make a .PDF
file?

Thanks!

PDF Creator is not part of MS Word but was for the last
10 years an add-on bundled with several other types of
software (e.g. Intuit Quicken, some printer drivers etc.)
If yours fails, it is probably because it works as a
pseudoprinter or some essential component was deleted.
You might meet your needs by
/ Print / Print to File
(which does not require configuring a pseudoprinter.)

IMO, PDF Creator is a great printing program. I use it almost daily.
It can print anything, pictures, text, RTF, DOC, XLS, etc, to PDF.
It is not part of Windows.
Yours is broken or not enabled. Make it the default printer.
Or see if the original is on your comp somewhere and
reinstall. If not then get it he
http://www.pdfforge.org/pdfcreator
Like all freeware even the old versions are loaded with garbageware.
Be careful what you click on during the install.
How to remove docs waiting to print:
Right click on the printer and Cancel print jobs.
May have to do that several times.
If that does not work then post back.
There are other ways to get rid of bad print jobs but
require more computer skills.

I was able to remove all the que print jobs, going to the PRINTERS from
Control Panel. But I still can get the PDF Creator to work. (See my
prior reply).
It *IS* My default printer (and only one, since I have no actual
printer).

you don't seem to know much about latest technology, is it fair to say
this? You are either retired or given up on Microsoft because you had
some experience that made you avoid all things Microsoft.

It depends on which version of Word you are using. If you are using
Word 2007 or later (part of office 2007, office 2010, or Office 2013)
then YES PDF is part of Word. In Office 2007, you had to download a
patch for PDF from Microsoft website but in Office in 2010 and 2013 it
is already built into the system,

To create a PDF file from Word 2007, 2010, and 2013, you need to "Save
as ..." and select PDF format.

Office 2007 patch is at this link:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=7

Good luck.

I have MS Word 2003. It came with the computer along with PDF Creator
installed. (XP Pro Sp3). This computer was used in a business office. I
had planned to wipe the drive, but since it has MS Word installed, along
with other useful office type software, and a AVG anti-virus. Aside from
some add on games and some personal pictures, the computer is clean, so
I'm just going to use it as-is.

It came with a prgm called TeamViewer 9, which I looked up and it
appears to be something so other computers in the office can link to it.
I dont think that came with Windows. Other than that, and the games, it
has Chrome installed. That I know is not part of Windows and I will
likely uninstall it.

I probably wont be using this computer online anyhow. I'll stick to my
XP laptop and my Win98 machines for the internet. This new computer has
a HUGE 750G Harddrive. I'll turn this into my storage computer, since my
Win98 machine has both of my 120G drives (240G total) filled up. And it
will work for office type duties.

I just took my files to the library and had the librarian make PDF's for
me. they have Windows 7. She told me it's MS Word 10 (2010 I suppose).
She did a "SAVE AS", and it made PDF files. I later did it myself byt
copying some text off a webpage, pasting it to MS Word, and SAVE AS
(PDF).

If I can get it cheap, will Word (Office) 2007 or 2010 wotk on XP.
Apparently this 2003 version is lacking features, even though I find it
as easy to use as Wordpad!!!! (And hate bloated crap).

Yea, I am retired.... so what??????
I've been using Win98se since 1998 for almost everything. I just have XP
on my laptop, and that is only used for WIFI and to play music and
videos when I'm travelling. Everything I download on the laptop gets
moved to my Win98 computer (except that is now full).

Microsoft makes a lot of bloated ****, and I have no intention of
upgrading to Vista, Win8 or Win10. I'd probably install Win7, (on a
spare computer) but not for $120 it's selling for on ebay.

MS made good software in the old days. And what else is there? Linux
made me vomit everytime I tried it!!!!!

I use the free Cute pdf Writer and it prints fine from MS Word.

. . It says:
"This document failed to print"

Document name: (the filename of my file)
Printer name: PDF Creator
Time sent: xxxxxxx (whatever it was)

Then it tells me to click on this error message and go to
troubleshooting. THe troubleshooting told me to try a notepad file. I
opened Notepad, entered some text, clicked PRINT.
I got the /same/ error msg.

"PDF Creator" /IS/ Set as my default printer. There is no physical
printer. I dont have one.

So reconfigure to make your default printer "Print to File" via
/ Start / Printers and Faxes
Task = Add a Printer
Wizard Next Next
When Plug & Play finds no Printers Next
"Use the following port" presents a menu (by ports instead
of by peripherals) which includes
"FILE: Print to File"
which is what you select
to make this file creation routine your Default Printer.

Probably not. The OP specified Word 2003, and asked
advice about his current setup i.e. was unwilling to
upgrade just for the one function for which he sought help.
This is reasonable because his problem is soluble with
current software, i.e. needs no "latest technology" or expense.
