Default How to Install New Windows Software on XP?

Hello- I just upgraded from 98 to XP. When I would install a new
windows program under 98, a window would pop up telling me to close all
window programs so I would simply hit ctrl-alt-del and close everything
except systray and explorer. With XP, it's not so clear. What do I
need to do? Thanks! K

Of course, these days it's a complete waste of time IMHO to bother to do
this. I have lots of apps running all the time on my PC, including AV
software. I never close any of them when I install something new and have
never had any problems. The same often goes for software that asks you to
reboot. You only really need to do that if the software updates drivers,
and even then it's not always necessary...

Just my 2p...

1)Right-click on a clear area of the TaskBar.
2)Choose "Task Manager' from the popup menu.
3)Click on the "Applications" tab.
4)Select each running application(except for the installation program of

the
software you are installing) one by one and click on "End Task" each time.
This is all which is necessary with Windows XP.

I would also make sure you disable all virus protection software after you

do
this. The reason for this is that many virus protection programs

interfere
with the installation programs of the software you are trying to install.
Don't forget to reenable this protection as soon as your new software is
installed.

I disagree. I have installed software your way, and some of it installs
improperly if any programs or virus protection are running.

A case in point: I advise you to make sure no programs or virus protection
are running when installing ATI's Multimedia Center 8.1. I found out the hard
way.

Of course, many times, as you indicate, there is no problem. But it's
usually the time we fail to take this precaution that software installs screw
up (a loose application of Murphy's Law,) and we are left with a mess on our
hard drives, instead of properly installed software.

I even installed ATI's multimedia centre without shutting anything down and
no problems... I've been doing this kind of stuff since Windows 1.0 and
before and the only time I've ever found a problem was with early versions
of McAfee... The only time you really need to shut an application down is
if your updating that application, otherwise it should not be relevant... If
it is, then I would question whether the application in question is up to
things it shouldn't be!
