Picasa for Windows is still great.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, but I will point out that
Irfanview can rotate JPGs with no loss in quality.

It would also be nice if, when rotating and saving a picture, it kept
the original also. The program below replaces the original and my
impression is that I lose size when I've done this, in XP and Vista.

In XP and Vista, iirc, when clicking on a .jpg file, the Something and
Picture Viewer would start and just by clicking on an arrow it would go
to the next picture in the directory.

But with win10, I just get a half-height, partial width bordeless box,
the right quarters of which are black. The name of the program appears
to be "Photos", and it is way inferior to Something and Picture Viewer.

There is no way to move straight to the next photo. "See all photos"
doesn't go the next one, only to a mosaic of them, and not just the
directory I'm looking at or even all its sister directories, but it
shows every directory with every .jpg file on the entire computer and I
have to hunt for set of pictures I'm trying to look at. Ugh.

Actually, it's not that different. To move back and forth between
pictures, move the cursor to the extreme left or right edge of the
picture and an arrow will appear,

I couldn't get that to happen. But no matter, I like FastSone image
viewer better anyhow because it also plays videos. You have to click on
the arrow or you can click on something else to go past them.

I don't think I've tried Irfanview to see if does that.

or just use the left and right arrow
keys on the keyboard.

I thing I tried that too.

For a slideshow, click the three dots in the
upper right corner and select "Slideshow".

I tend to open a folder and start with a picture of what might be the
best date, and when I do that Slideshow just shows the same photo over
and over and over.

But I'm not sure what the other programs do. They might do the same.

Also, if you upgraded from
Windows 7 or 8, you might still have Windows Photo Viewer. Right-click
an image file, select "Open with" and see if it shows up.

I will check that out.

I've been looking at my pictures and rather than lose quality when
turning a picture right side up, I might gain quality. Rather than
being too short when right side up, it is too narrow when on its side,
and I don't know what I look like, but my good friend next to me has a
face so narrow he appears to be starving. In other pictures that
didn't need rotating, he looks normal. So, yes, even if perchance I
lose "quality", whatever that is, the image will look the way it should,
not squeezed from the side.

I've seen this on the web. I was looking at the website of a membership
organization and they have photos of their more prominent members. 5 or
10% of them have a ridiculously narrow face. I didn't make it to the
web, but when my membership card came, I too looked ridiculous.

The second time I did it, it plunged right into the videos, and neither
Esc nor the right arrow would interrupt it. They were short, but 3 of
mine are 3, 7, and 10 minutes.

There's a fairly long instruction manaual, so I'll have to look there
for how to stop a video without losing ones place in a directory.

It is my understanding that you can do any thing you want to an image,
as any loss occurs only when you save the file. So if you keep the
original and only play with a copy you will never loose anything.

In a previous message there was talk about slide shows. Irvanview can
do slide shows easily.

There are actually two parts of Irfanview. The one is the normal
editing viewing window. There is a second part, Irvanview Thumbnails.
It can be added as as second icon, or access from the Irfanview program.
The thumbnails part presents thumbnails of the folder access like the
old light boxes. When you click on a thumbnail it opens the file in
Irfanview. In Irfanview Thumbnail you can manipulate the file as if
you were in Windows File Explorer.

I do not use Irfanview Thumbnail as it is just as easy to use File
Explorer, and set it for large thumbnails.

That's true, but Irfanview can do a couple of permanent operations,
specifically rotation and cropping, without having to resave the
original JPG and thereby losing a generation of quality.

You can even save them as a self-contained executable. With music even!

The Thumbnail feature is good for a few things. You can choose various
pictures from the thumbs and then do a batch operation (rename,
convert, move, resize, etc.) and you can make actual discrete thumbnail
images for use on a web page.

That's true, but my inclination was to rotate and save the pictures that
need it when I'm home, then when I show the pictures to someone else
they will already be rotated and he won't have to wait while I fumble
with each one.

But when I tried this with Photo Viewer, it overlaid the first file.

One of the other two, Irfan or Fastsone, had a separate option to save
the photo separately. I might do that for each one (scattered through
1200 pictures) but if there is no point in saving the original, that
would be simpler.

You just reminded me I had a viewer (or something) with music and I
haven't seen it for years. I really liked the melody too, but I can't
remember what its name was or even what it did (in case it wasn't a
viewer)..

It can do a lot of things. I felt, and feel, overwhelmed, by still
another piece of software.

BTW, I found two programs that will rotate a video. I haven't used
either one yet. Davinci Reolove is 670 megs however, just the
download.. I think the other one is wlsetup and even it is 111megs.
Both are free.

Presume you mean Davinci Resolve 14
- https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/uk/...avinciresolve/

Wlsetup generally refers to Windows Live Essentials suite, of which the part
you need is Windows Movie Maker.
Support ended in January 2017 but the installer can still be downloaded from

FastSone Image Viewer (currently V6.4, http://www.faststone.org/), just
to give you an alternative. (I see this NG is infested with IrfanView
fans. I find Irfanview a little old school, with lots of potential
(optional) baggage. FastStone is fast, small footprint, and allows you a
small number of essential image processing functions with the ability to
'contract out' to external programs like Irfanview.

I use both Irfanview and FastStone. I like FastStone more. It just seems
a little more intuitive.

My 2 cents.

I agree. Plus, you can invoke Irfanview from Faststone ('Edit with
External Program'). I am not sure the other way around is possible.

I think it's really two different things. IV is a basic
viewer and to some extent an editor. It handles anything
well and it's lightweight. Fastone is more like Picasa --
an Explorer substitute for images.

Which is better? IV will easily allow for going through
photos in a folder. FS will show them all as thumbnails
and loads them quickly.

Faststone is nothing like Picasa. It is not a 'busybody' program which
tries to take over your image files like Picasa. Picasa is a typical
Google program for people who like to be mothered.

I'd agree with that. Picasa is in a category described with
the absurdly valorizing term of "asset management". It's
Explorer for dummies, finding photos on disk for people who
have no idea how to do it themselves.

But FS does use an Explorer-style interface in order to
combine search and viewing in one window. There's nothing
wrong with that. I'm just saying it's a lot more functionality
than some people need. It's more than just an image viewer.
I know where my images are. I
don't need to search an Explorer treeview to find them.
I don't want a big window showing all the images in a folder.
So I just use IrfanView for viewing because all I want is
a simple, quick, light program that can paint any image
onscreen when I double-click the file. And IV's ability to
move through a folder is good enough for what I do. But
if you do a lot of searching through folders then FS, with
it's well designed thumbnail display, might be more handy.
