Magically appearing fictitious drives
windows 7 home premium
I was working on hooking up my thermaltake blackx box and got it working finally. But now I have two additional drives that won't go away. Both are marked as "removable disk". These drives were not there before the box was installed. How can I get rid of them? Even sfter undocking, and a restart, they remain. What the heck am I talking about? A nice little gadget that allows two hard drives to be accessed as an external drive. Which can be swapped out any time you need to. http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Produc...C=1346&ID=1895 |

Do you mean in addition to the two drives in the Thermaltake box? The drives in the Thermaltake box should show up as long as it is plugged in or tuned on. If it's unplugged, they should disappear. HTH, Wolf K. The drives marked as "removable disk" are there with the thermaltake box out of the picture entirely. That means, the USB has been unplugged and the power to the box is off. As I recall, when I had this box on another machine using windows 7, the fictitious drives were not present then. |

It's up to the USB adapter chip inside the enclosure, whether it wants to respond when no drives are connected. If it responds to probes on the USB bus, and has its serial number read, the OS will conclude it's the same device (and drives) as the last time. If the device simply passes along the SATA signals without modification, the ESATA interface might be slightly more well behaved (but require an AHCI driver for the storage controller on the motherboard, for the hot plug detection). Perhaps if you didn't waste money on things like that, you'd have the money you need to build your dome home. What cable would that be? So far I use the cradle for by USB3 External drive but I wouldn't mind having another option. Al. |

I don't think those cables allow two drives to be addressed as if one. Perhaps if you didn't waste money on things like that, you'd have the money you need to build your dome home. This sort of thing: http://goo.gl/L4Gsz (OK, that one's over ten pounds, but that includes a power supply, lots of cables, and a driver CDlet. You can probably get just the cable - on the right of that picture, USB to EIDE/SATA - for a bit less). -- J. P. Gilliver. Something I should have done before posting, I googled and found several options. I think I will stick with the cradle I now have and install USB3 cards in other machines. |

I've ordered many Vantec external enclosures, and the $18.97 item in the upper left hand corner of this page. http://www.xpcgear.com/idesataadapter.html |
