Thanks to all who responded, see Paul's response in this thread, the
driver worked and we'll see about the fix to prevent MSFT updates from
wiping it out again....

I did NOT read the rest of the responses, which may have answered your
question, where Jonathan Little and I long ago resolved the issue with the
"legacy" HP printer driver setup (using Microsoft Catalogue, which is the
ONLY method that worked for our legacy printer).

Your legacy printer is a different model, but hopefully this information
will help you - which is why Jonathan and I wrote all this up long ago for
you to find.

o Tutorial for the EASIEST (maybe only?) way to install a problematic legacy printer such as the HP LaserJet 2100 on Windows 10 current versions
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/alt.comp.freeware/Qb-fXNOH_8g/bOPEMHn6CAAJ

Please bear in mind that Usenet is a potluck where everyone SHARES value,
where we _tried_ to put *EVERY* known method to install legacy printers
into that tutorial.

If you find a DIFFERENT (better, faster, easier, etc.) method that is NOT
in that tutorial, please post what you found as Usenet, when it works,
helps everyone by what you can offer in each solution.

Good luck - and let us know if that tutorial works for you.

I really need that printer, I use it to print checks and just
spent $40 on a new MICR toner cartridge so I can print checks.

I've deleted and reinstalled several times but apparently I have
to find a new driver? So far, Google has been no help nor has
HP, they just say the printer is unsupported but it worked with
the drivers I had up until last week or so???

I'm running a Dell XPS 8930, Win 10 64 bit.

TIA!

There's quite a bit on the web about the subject.

There is and so far it's all useless.

Probably most will not apply but maybe this solution will work?

What solution? So far I haven't found one.

Oh! Sorry, forgot to attach the url.
It was the same one that Paul NoSpam attached.

It would if there were such a driver, there is not.

I had a HP Laserjet 5L connected to PC using a USB to parallel-port
adapter. Driver was indeed installed from Window$ Update.

But then I dunno about 6L, which is also a HP Laserjet printer.

Basically the same printer, the Windows Update driver worked until the
last update which is when my problem started, just a few days ago.

I wish it's not related to the 1903 upgrade process. Maybe you need to
clean install Win 10....

OTOH, keep re-plugging the USB to parallel port adapter. Also, go to
Device Manager, uninstall the HP Laserjet 6L entry and delete driver
files. Then reboot to force a re-installation of driver.

I suppose you didn't turn off automatically download driver in Device
Manager - Hardware?!

Hi XS11E,

I see Paul helped you, where Paul is, arguably, the *best* of the best in
terms of Usenet working to share value among we old grizzled men.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/procedure-for-installing-a-hp-laserjet-6l-printer/9b92badc-fa25-48fb-aec7-47c73af4515b

Can you please summarize the solution for us that worked for you, so that I
can update the tutorial to help the _next_ person who can't install a
legacy driver on Windows 10? (I think your situation is different than mine
was with the HP LJ 2100tn where your situation is using the parallel port,
right?).

Does the fact you're using the parallel port even matter in terms of the
solution? Why would the port matter in terms of re-installing the driver?

Is this summary of Paul's link correct?
1. HP no longer supplies the Windows 10 printer driver for the HP LJ 6L
2. Windows 10 automatically installs a PostScript printer driver
3. Windows automatically labels it "Hewlett Packard LaserJet 6L Printer"
4. But that Hewlett Packard LaserJet 6L printer doesn't support PostScript
5. The Windows 10 printer-specific Windows Update is, as always, worthless
6. However, if the legacy printer can handle PCL5, you're in luck
7. First remove the PostScript printer driver installed by Windows
8. Download the last version of the HP Universal Printer Driver for 64-bit PCs which supports PCL5
9. When you install _that_ as the printer driver, everything works!

Is _that_ what worked for you XS11E?

I'm curious if the "cab" file method works for your particular printer?
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=hp%20laserjet%206L

I see there is only Windows 8 - so I ask in general what the chance is that
a Windows 8 CAB file will work for Windows 10?

Still think it's the USB to parallel port adapter. Anyway, since Paul
found found you a standalone 6L driver, so be it.

Just download it and keep it. You might not be able to find it again.

How's your 6L's plastic cage?

Just fine. It's my third, I destroyed a previous one with a cup of
coffee, HP printers are not coffee proof, a serious black mark IMHO!
G Don't recall what did in the first but I may have given it away?
