Shows the window title, process and program and owns that window, and
lots of other info (that probably is unimportant to you).

Loaded/ installed/executed it. You're right - Lots of info - I see of
little use to me - but I'll keep it around - THANKS

So, when you got the message that Word still had a dialog open, you
didn't see more than 1 window listed for winword.exe in WinLister? The
point wasn't how much information is provided by WinLister, but if you
could see there was more than one window opened by Word.

I watched WinLister as I went thru the process of opening a .DOC file,
hung on the open dialog box message, and after I brought up the
document itself (three times). Only saw what I should see - no second
WinLister line involving winword.

Nope. Running it now. Only issue I have is with every new iteration of
Windows 10 I have to open my first script-embedded Excel spreadsheet as
administrator in order to re-confirm acceptance of my scripting cert.

Outlook 2003, too? That's the component of Office 2003 that I've read
that has problems on Windows 10.

I'm running Word, Excel, and Outlook from Windows Office Professional 2003
on Win10Pro x64. Been running it on various MS OS's since well, 2003 :-)
Up until ~10 years ago, I also had Access installed, but retired it shortly
after I retired- didn't have much need for it in a home non-office setting.

I have been running Word and Excel on W7 8 10 on two machines for
years. No problems til now, and now only on W10 on one machine.
I can still use Word on the trouble machine - it is just an irritant.

Did you try "Run as administrator" to see if that fixed the dialog error?

I too am using Office 2003 (Word, Excel, and Outlook) (Pro version). Happy
to say, I haven't run into that error.

That may have narrowed it down some, but there are still too many hits
(~24,000,000) to make looking through them viable.

Do you have all of the Office service packs and updates installed? Some of
them are compatibility updates.

Instead of uninstalling and reinstalling, do a repair installation of Word:
Open Control PanelPrograms and Features. Highlight Word 2003 (or Office
2003 if you have the suite) and click on Repair at the top of the list.
Follow the prompts. You may need the installation CD.

If that doesn't work, search for Winword.exe. Right-click on it and pick
"Run as Administrator". Do you still see the error? (That was one of the
suggestions that worked from answers.microsoft.com)

Do you have any other Office products installed? If so, do they all work OK?
Good luck :-)

Thanks

I am having 1 H of a time trying to run as administrator - my W10
seems to not follow suggestions I find on the web. I will coninue to
try/

My Excel runs just fine. No nag like Word.

Go to your McAfee settings, Real-Time Scanning, Excluded Files, and add
winword.exe. You may have to navigate to the Office folder if that's an
option, or add the complete path (including the quotes).

I don't have McAfee, but read this is how to do it. Very similar to my
ZoneAlarm settings.
