Retail versions do not included disc media.
Download option and product key.

The downloaded file can be used to reinstall Office.
- the license only provides for use on one pc
- installing on a different pc will nullify the license on the other
pc and after a short period of time deactivate as non-genuine.
- installing the second time (as opposed to restoring an image of the
o/s and software drive/partition) may require a phone call (to
Microsoft) to activate the software.

For those curious about upgrade pricing and media.
From MSFT Office Chat
"Unfortunately there is no upgrade versions of Office only the full
versions"

Looks like ms changed the licensing from the 2007 version. The
office 2007 can be installed onto 2 computers with both being
"legitimate"; at least that was the way it was marketed & sold
expecting the 2 computers being a desktop & laptop.

Too bad not sure if anyone has just a word processor available as
I don't need any of the other stuff or want to pay the price for
all 3 types of apps.

That was true for earlier version of MS Office too. There was a version
of MS Office 2010 that was free and was advertisement based. Although it
only ran on Windows Vista and 7. And it isn't compatible with Windows
8.x.

Save yourself some money, use:

LibreOffice: https://www.libreoffice.org/

OpenOffice: https://www.openoffice.org/

or any other free office Suite:
http://www.techradar.com/news/softwa...y-1139295#null

They all do the same as Ms-Office and the are free.

None of them have Outlook so not the same.

True if you are strictly comparing the office suites. But you can add
an email client to your computer, and be functionally the same.
Interoperability may suffer a bit, depending on how you use your computer.

There are other established mainstream Office Suits available.

While I do not use it IBM Lotus Symphony is still available, free, and
being maintained

http://ibm-lotus-symphony.en.softonic.com/

Lotus Symphony appears to be a subscription service now, I couldn't find
a download for it on IBM's site, but that doesn't mean it isn't there.
Symphony is based on Open Office.

Personally I use Corel WordPerfect suite with wordprocessor,
spreadsheet, and a presentation.

It is significantly less than MS Word and if you watch you can get great
deals on the Student/Home edition which can be installed on up to 3
computers. If you watch you can get the full version for about $150,
depending on the deal you find.

Office 2007 had three licenses terms - Retail, OEM, and Media Kit. Only
Retail provided use on two devices - the licensed device and a portable
device.

Office 2010 retail also provided the ability for two devices (the
licensed and a portable device). OEM and Product Key Card were one pc
(licensed device)

Office 2013 is licensed to one sole device.

I've tried them all and none are like Outlook. T-Bird is often suggested
by these suites and it's tried hard to be like Outlook but Outlook beats
T-Bird hands down when it comes to HTML email. When I compose an email
with Outlook, the fonts, colors, etc. are replicated exactly the way I
want them to look in Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and GMail as well as T-Bird. If
you use T-Bird, the emails change fonts when they arrived at their
destination, usually reverting to Times New Roman and a smaller font.
This is the only reason I need it over T-Bird. I don't do exchange.

I have not had that problem with TB/Lightning. What it I send the other
person receives, unless they have the parameters on their computer set
wrong. I routinely send and received event invitations using Lightning.
Some of the people in our family are using Company provided
Office/Outlook some are using other Suites.

I find Lightning will completely integrate with Corel, and other
programs I use.

PS: Corel Wordperfect for three user can frequently be found for about
$60 Less when rebated.

Lightning is the calendar component for Thunderbird.

AFAIK, I've not had the HTML issues you've experienced with TB, but the
editor is sure buggy. :-( When I have time, I'm going to look at the
current version of Zimbra Desktop. No real idea of what I'll find.

I still can't make a decision on this. I just went to the local
computer store and read the information on the little envelope that
contains some kind of business card with a code on it. It seems to me
that buying one of these will let me set my one computer up to do my
regular MS Office work on cloud nine or some such. That is, I won't
have a copy of the MS Office client software installed on my computer.
Did I misinterpret the information on the MS Office 2013 envelopes at
the store?

Another question I have regarding MS Windows 8.1 is, how do I do a
synchronize between two folders...one on my computer and one on an
external hard drive. I know I can do a fresh copy of the computer's
folder to the external drive but I would like to just do a simple
synchronize that would bring both folders up to the exact same file
contents.

Thanks, Gordon

Another question I have regarding MS Windows 8.1 is, how do I do a
synchronize between two folders...one on my computer and one on an
external hard drive. I know I can do a fresh copy of the computer's
folder to the external drive but I would like to just do a simple
synchronize that would bring both folders up to the exact same file
contents.

There are many ways to do this, but I love SyncBack for these kinds of
tasks.

Thanks, Bill. I may get this and try it out. I was thinking there was
a "built-in" function in MS Windows 8.1 that would do this with no
need to install any new software. Gordon

Default MS Office box copy?

I still can't make a decision on this. I just went to the local
computer store and read the information on the little envelope that
contains some kind of business card with a code on it. It seems to me
that buying one of these will let me set my one computer up to do my
regular MS Office work on cloud nine or some such. That is, I won't
have a copy of the MS Office client software installed on my computer.
Did I misinterpret the information on the MS Office 2013 envelopes at
the store?

Here are the Office versions available.

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/...oryID.62684700

Which box did you read ?

365 is subscription based, Office 2013 is not.
- Some 365 plans come with locally installed Office applications.
- All Office 2013 version install Office locally on your machine.
