XP Home Recovery Console
I am trying to repair someones computer using Recovery Console using chkdsk
/r . The process starts and reaches some 61% and then reverts to 50% then goes again. The last time I saw this happen in this same computer it did that 3 times then I think it failed. This is the second new 500GB sat hard drive installed....ps, do not tell the hard drive seller. I do not seem to be receiving noitifications so a reply may be a day or two away. Thank you. -- ....scribble scribble scribble... |

XP Home Recovery Console
I cannot tell you what to do about this, other than say that the advice given by
"glee" is probably your best bet. However, for what it's worth, I can tell you a little about what is happening with the percentage numbers "jumping" about.... CHKDSK /R in Recovery Console (RC) covers the same areas in it's scan as does it's Windows counterpart "chkdsk /f" (although the Recovery Console version actually uses Autochk.exe and not Chkdsk.exe). So, as with the Windows console version you have three main separate "scans" : CHKDSK is verifying files and folders... CHKDSK is verifying indexes... CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors... ....this is reflected in CHKDSK /R (RC) where the three sections, as above, take up percentage "ranges" : Verifying files.....(up to) 25% Verifying indexes.....(up to) 50% Verifying descriptors.....(up to) 75% ....the percentage then normally "jumps" from the 75% mark to 100% complete. SO, I would have said that because you are seeing the progress jumping back to the 50% marker from somewhere between the 50-75% section and then repeating itself, unable to get past a seemingly invisible "obstacle". That the problem lies with the third section - verifying security descriptors! Beyond this insight, I'm afraid I cannot tell you any more than that. But, I have found that running "chkdsk /f" under Windows, having temporarily placed the drive in another machine / windows installation, often overcomes chkdsk problems in RC, and vice-versa. == Cheers, Tim Meddick, Peckham, London. :-) "umwhat" wrote in message ... XP Home Recovery Console
Thank you glee and Tim , I had seen the person who uses this computer use
Crack software. I do not know which applications will had use the crack stuff but I suspect that is what happened. Any way, I deleted all the temporary files, and I just thought of a good excuse for that, I had to, and have formattedthe hard drive with Easeus Partition software, checked the hard drive with Western Digitals Datalifeguard, good hint to suggest the manufacturers software, for sme odd reason I usually seem to forget to use that , but now have XP Home reinstalled ok. Thank you both. -- ....scribble scribble scribble... "Tim Meddick" wrote: I cannot tell you what to do about this, other than say that the advice given by "glee" is probably your best bet.
