Default software installation problems

When my computer was built the builder assigned my hard
drive to F instead of C. This is usually not a problem but
I am trying to install a program that defaults to the C
drive. Of course I get an error message. The installer does
not ask me for an installation location so I am Stuck.
I opened the Group policy dialog and tried to change the
default drive but I have no sub levels under software in
either the computer or user trees.
If anybody has any ideas I would appreciate it.

If you change your system drive from letter F to letter C your PC will most
likely fail to start after reboot.

Thanks for your reply but I do not want to change the drive
designation. I need to change the default to F so this
program that is trying to install to a non-existant c-drive
will default to F instead and finish the install.

Hi

In a command prompt (or from Start/Run), run the following
command:

subst C: F:\

This will create a virtual drive C: that actually is F:

Then you can try to install the program. Note that this virtual
drive will be disappear if you reboot or log off/on, so you will
need to run the command again if you want to run the program
later on after doing a reboot or logoff.

torgeir,
Great fix. The virtual drive not only worked but was really
neat. Once the program found the c-drive it allowed me to
install to my F-drive like normal.
Thanks a lot
