Default External Hard Drive

Before I spend money on a replacement, I want to make sure there isn’t a
cheaper solution.

I am using Windows XP Home Edition on a Dell desktop. I have been using a
Maxtor external hard drive connected to the USB , single partition for simple
back up of files.. I have used the external hard drive a few times so I know
I have the correct drivers and it did work. The last time I backed up, the
external hard drive was less than 25% full.

I disconnected the security suite before connecting the external hard drive
to prevent security interference and slows everything down.

It shows up in My Computer, but when I try to open it, after a very very
very long wait, I get a message that it needs to be formatted. Can’t open
Properties from My Computer.

Disk management says that the hard drive is “healthy,” “on line” and 100%
Free. Selecting Properties from Disk Management takes a long time to open.
It shows the drive 100% Full.

Devise Properties reports, “This device is working properly.”

Hardware update wizard could not find a newer driver.

I tried it on a notebook computer running Windows Business Edition and got
all of the above described results.

Though the drive could of course be defective...
there is a very good chance that the drive itself is perfectly good...but
the USB interface within the external box is bad.

Remove the drive from the enclosure and install it in a desktop machine and
see if it's readable.

Who suggested that this was a good idea? Using an external hard drive
for storage should be no more complicated than using a flash (thumbnail)
drive. Scan the drive for malware using a good antivirus and more than
one antimalware program
