Default lexmark z53 not printing with xp

Nephew has similar problem with a Canon S400. Paper goes down an inch,
tries to print. Then error. His is w98se.

Look for possible applications which may be interacting. Some would be
CDburning, other print applications or hardware that could use the
same memory page.

I just got a brand new Dell 2350 equipped with windows xp with a
celeron processor and 256 MB memory, and now my Lexmark z53 printer
(which worked just fine on my ancient gateway that had windows 98)
will not print. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the
printer, I've gotten and downloaded the new supposedly windows xp
compatible drivers from lexmark (both the custom and generic one), and
yet, when I attempt to print anything, it will take a piece of paper
into the printer about halfway, and then get stuck, with the light
next to the power blinking on and off. No information from lexmark or
microsoft seems to address this problem beyond telling you to
uninstall and re-install, and none of the problems I've found in their
knowledge base describe problems like what I'm seeing. Originally, I
had the printer hooked up through my iomega zip 250 drive (as it was
set up that way on my old gateway). Thinking that this might be the
problem, I have now hooked the printer up directly to the cpu.
Basically, when I try to print, it acts like it is starting, but then
it just sits for a long time with a piece of paper half-way through
the printer, and the light at the power button blinks on and off,
while the printer says it is spooling or printing. Eventually, it
claims that there is an error, and the job failed to print.

What gives?? Help!!!!
Thanks,
Brittany
