The images in the folder "Pictures" have a default size of "large".

Can this be changed to default to "Extra Large Icons"?

If I read you correctly, I would say yes!

Click on "Pictures" then click "View" and then "Extra Large Icons".

Thanks, I do this but I don't want to. Can I get the images to open
as "Extra Large Icons" automatically?

This is a really old article.

https://www.ghacks.net/2006/10/02/ch...-preview-size/

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer
ThumbnailSize DWORD 256

Using the Folder Options, you can set the View of all folders
to your Extra Large thumbnails. That would likely override the previous
registry setting anyway. I can't really predict the inheritance
of the previous registry key, versus the settings in the particular
file explorer pane. There's a very good chance that setting won't
have any effect at all.

Currently the thumbnails come in four sizes, and you may spot
cache files with file names that identify the pixel dimensions used
for each. The 256 is just a guess.

If you remember, we had a discussion about thumbnails before,
when I wrote a little code to force thumbnail generation for
a whole folder tree. That code didn't make them display, and
all it did was reduce display time by having all the
thumbnails pre-loaded in cache.

I would recommend using a different program to do what I believe you
are wanting to do.

You might find that Faststone Image Viewer would suit your purpose. It
can be downloaded from http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDownload.htm

I have posted a picture at https://imgur.com/a/drRSV which shows six
picture icons and a selected picture in a larger view.
