"Google's not-so-secret new OS"
http://www.osnews.com/story/29666/Go...-secret_new_OS Google is going to walk away from Linux for Android ? This is a kill shot to Windows by Google. One wonders if it will work. One result might be that Microsoft releases Windows as freeware. Lynn |

For that is what distinguishes modern OSes. Not what is underneath, but whether they can order pizza via voice command. My secret plan, is to develop an OS that can order pizza and *donairs*. I have a software patent on the donair feature, so nobody else will be able to order a donair. Paul |

Lynn If it becomes as popular as windows is, IE it holds the dominant market share. it will suffer the same problems as windows. there is no real profit in targeting linux os's as it holds a small share in the market. plus the numerous flavors of linux makes it hard to target users of linux. Not that linux is immune to hacking or viruses. |

"Google's not-so-secret new OS"
What ist happening since a few months and will continue, is the
integration of Androidapps into Chrome OS: http://www.theverge.com/2017/2/15/14...disappointment Mossberg: Android apps on Chrome OS arrive, disappoint The idea is great, but the execution needs work by Walt Mossberg@waltmossberg Feb 15, 2017, 9:00am EST (...) Linux in its different forms (including Android, Chrome OS, the OS of your router) is already the most used OS on the planet. Here some nice graphics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_...rating_systems Usage share of operating systems For me it is abvious, that the fat client, dominated by Windows, is dying slowly. Present and future are cloud apps which only need a OS like Chrome OS as a thin client. Our daughter has a Chromebit, connected to a Dell 24" monitor (1920*1200 Pixel), and I like it. No hand holding for Windows any more, no annoying updates blocking the device for hours. The monthly update takes about 1 minute. Regards M. |

The real article is over at: https://techspecs.blog/blog/2017/2/1...-secret-new-os Don't know why the site decided to go lightweight on color (grey instead of black). Luckily it supports Reader Mode (in Firefox). Should it be of interest, Firefox has an 'Add-on' called "Blacken" which alters the grey colour of the text at that link to black! https://addons.mozilla.org/en-Gb/firefox/addon/blacken/ "The Blacken add-on scans a page for places where the foreground color is specified as some shade of grey. The color of the text will be changed to either black or white to maximise the contrast with the background. Optionally you can have colored text altered to improve the contrast with the background. Normally Blacken runs automatically on each page. There are manual controls available in either a toolbar popup or the right-button menu. There has been a recent fad for spindly text with certain fonts. Blacken will also thicken the text a bit by increasing any font weight less than 400 (normal) up to 400. (See the Thicken Text preference)." -- "Do something wonderful, people may imitate it." (Albert Schweitzer) |

I can sympathize with everything you write. But we, the consumers have also a profit motive. You call it convenience - less money and time spent by consumers for the IT-functions/-services they wish. Our computers at home are idle most of the time. CPUs not working at full potential, hard disks empty, maintenance for individual machines by the consumer is cumbersome and expensive. Same for cars - public transport is much more economical. So is a public cloud. Economies of scale will win here, again. So our role as consumers will be to choose cloud services wisely to maintain a market and competition. If this should not happen, strong regulation and nationalization has to be considered. Cloud services will become as important as electricity or water supply or health care. They should be regulated accordingly - in germany this means, very strictly. Regards Michael |

And use Signal instead of Whatsapp. And my main email provider is a german one, though I use Gmail for my private purposes and within family (calendar sharing). Best Regards Michael |
