Monitor suddenly switched to Black & White
This morning whilst reading some emails, my monitor screen suddenly
switched to Black & White (all-in-one system, so no cables). I have no idea why so I rebooted the PC but it made no difference. The Monitor is ok as the Windows log-on screen was in full colour, but as soon as it switch to displaying my desktop it was only black & white again. I could not find any "Windows settings" that might switch from colour to b&w, and neither could I find anything in the Display Adaptor settings. I tried rolling back the Display Adaptor driver, and re-installing the driver, but that did not help. It is an all-in-one system with built in video, so there are no external cables to "wiggle about". I finally fixed it by doing a system restore, but I would love to know what might have gone wrong in case it happens again. Any ideas? |

Are there any options intended to improve contrast for sight impaired users? (You said you couldn't find any settings, but maybe there's something in the "ease of access" settings you missed). As to why it happened, I have no idea. |

Of the Registry files, some of the files belong to the system, and some of the files belong to your account. Creating a new account, when you're logged into that new account, the colors might be normal again. That would tell you it was a registry entry of some sort. Uninstalling software and reinstalling the software again, seldom fixes anything because the uninstall step does not remove "user preferences", and the newly installed software will "respect" any user preferences it finds. This makes it difficult to "refresh away" a problem. There are only a few pieces of software which offer the proper settings to do stuff like that (actually fix something for you). Paul |

In the Ease of Access settings under "Color & high contrast" is a setting for grayscale. The keystroke to turn that on /off is WinKey+Ctrl+C (according to the instruction there). You might try that and see it it changes your screen back to full color. How anyone would accidentally do that key sequence is beyond me, but hey, stuff happens :-) -- SC Tom |

Ah!
I think you may have hit on it. It says that the greyscale/colour filter can be toggled by clicking "Windows logo key + Ctrl + C" I never knew this existed, so maybe I somehow managed to click this combo whilst intending to click something else. Many thanks, Ted. On 09/11/2017 13:18, SC Tom wrote: In the Ease of Access settings under "Color & high contrast" is a setting for grayscale. I have repeatedly switched the keyboard from US English to French (Canada) on all my windows machines, from way back. I wish there was key I could set to prevent this, but apparently there isn't one. (Tthat's a disguised Plea For Help). Do you want both those options to be present ? When my laptop was doing that, I removed the option I didn't want, and then no fat-fingered combo could trigger a change. Paul |

As to why it happened, I have no idea. OH. Yeah, that is a distinct possibility. I thought the user meant monochrome. But if he means black and white with no other colors, yes a color scheme is a good lead. How exactly the color scheme was changed is a good question. Maybe the email author offered it in a file and the original poster clicked on the color scheme file. |

Seems there is none of that on my system. Never heard of it. Never seen it before. The keystroke combination does not do anything here, either. Anybody else have that stuff? -- You might try that and see it it changes your screen back to full color. How anyone would accidentally do that key sequence is beyond me, but hey, stuff happens :-) |

I don't think I have pictures, from before I modified it, but the basic concepts are here. There should be a dialog window, listing both English and French Canadian. https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...dd-remove.html It was, perhaps, the very first thing I fixed on the laptop, after I received it as a gift. I would be typing along, and it would switch to the French Canadian key map right in the middle of a sentence, and it was driving me nuts. I was happy to find, that rather than being limited to "switching", I could actually just delete the excess one I had no intention of using. A situation hasn't arisen yet on the laptop, where I needed an acute, a grave or a cedilla. http://www.dummies.com/languages/fre...d-the-cedilla/ déjÃ* fête garçon The French I was taught in school, was the Parisian French, and not French Canadian. Consequently, I could never order "¿Poutine, Por Favor" when traveling in Quebec :-) When I was dressed in ski suit and carrying downhill skis and poles, I had a Quebecois taxi driver refuse to drive me to the only ski slope in town, while he did his version of "Je ne comprende pas". I don't get many chances any more to practice my french, because... well... my french, she is pretty bad. Paul |
