Default Regedit.exe: "The Service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" ???

C:\Windows\Regedit.exe....

Right-click, choose "Run As Administrator"... and it throws "The Service
did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion".

Tried the obvious combinations and permutations.... from the Start menu,
from a Command line.... as Admin and not as Admin... but it just won't
start for me.

Anybody been here?

Computer | Properties | System | Windows Edition just says "Windows
8"... no version, no SP... just Windows 8.

Nope, but by any chance was the last *successful* use of REGEDIT to look at
another machine's Registry? This would require that the "Remote Registry"
service be running; it normally disabled.

In any case, try deleting the Registry entry that tells REGEDIT to open at
the key it last displayed (you can do this with the REG command), then see
if you can open REGEDIT. I suggest first looking to see what's there (and
maybe write it somewhere):

REG QUERY HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App lets\Regedit

The item of interest is the data item "LastKey". Here's the command to
delete the key, any subkeys, and all their data values:

REG DELETE HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App lets\Regedit

This command will ask you for confirmation before deleting the key.

I had never heard of the REG command.

Thanks for the lesson!

Per Joe Morris:

The plot thickens.... as we are getting the same error being thrown
whenever we try to install something.... even as Administrator.

So I couldn't even install MalwareBytes to see if it would find
anything. Avast hasn't reported anything....

I'm in the process of trying out how to boot my 64-bit ShadowProtect
recovery environment and just re-image from a known "good" version of my
system.
