Avira versus Avast

Yeah I know , This has probably been asked a gazillion times but I am not really finding the answer I am looking for. I cannot find a clear answer on which one runs better or is the better product. Currently running Avast free on this Win 8.1 machine as well as on some win7 machines and Avira free on other win7 machines Question: Which do you feel runs better on your machine? What others besides Norton or Mcafee do you run. I know I am going to hear the response of run them and decide yourself but occasionally I would like a second opinion. Thanks in advance Drew. For me personally, the are the highest rated free AV that is decent, Bitdefender free will quarantine false positives and not let you bring them back, AVG slows things down, Avast doesn't detect more than Avira in the latest real world test, Avira is light on resources, great detection rate... oh and Panda WILL **** your PC up.. |

Why what is wrong with windows defender? Nothing is "wrong" with it, but it was basically a token gesture from Microsoft. If you think of any well-known anti-virus (Avast! and Avira are two typical examples), and picture that AV program as a fully tricked out SUV, Windows Defender by comparison is a subcompact car. Tony It just quietly goes about its work, It does not wake me in the middle of the night screaming about what it has just done, like avast does in my other XP computer. |

PS I get much less trouble on my laptop with win 8.1 and defender than I do with XP and avira on the other computer You could go with that 50-mile max, 50 mph max spare tire. Or, like some car owners, you could put a full size tire in the boot so you have a real tire as a spare. Depends on how much real protection you want. About the only AV that I know of that has worse detection coverage than Defender is ClamWin. There are probably others but I don't acquaint myself with the worst products. https://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/rap-index.xml They add Microsoft [Defender] to provide a reference for the others. I always found it amusing that Defender was the quietest AV product and also had a good score regarding its ability to disinfect a system of malware. Well, yeah, it's much easier when you are missing a lot of the nastiest malware, like looking out only one window of your house to watch for the approach of a tornedo. Nope, still don't see it. Hmm, what's that train-like noise? Guess you never bothered to wade through all the config options for Windows Defender, too. For example, is its install-time choice of when to scan your computer, assuming you even want an on-demand scan, an idle time or might that be during the prime time use of your computer? Windows Defender also takes user configuration. I cannot address the unidentified troubles of Avira on Windows XP in addition to the unknown differences in hardware and software setup on different platforms. http://www.av-comparatives.org/detection-test/ File detection: Avira: 99.9% Avast: 99.4% Microsoft: 86.3% Heuristics detection: Avira: Avast: Microsoft is shown as the blue line reference against with the other AV products are compared. You want a product that exceeds that threshold. It is tough to outdo the threshold for a product that is quiet because it can't detect much so it won't alert much. Saying Defender is better than nothing isn't saying much. Eh, it might catch something someday and in the meantime it missing a lot and why it is so nice and quiet. Considering the performance impact of Defender, it's slower compared to more effective AV products but does less. Defender is Microsoft's token security program as evidence of Microsoft prior claim of keeping their customers secure. They made the claim and then had to come up with something prove they were making good that claim. So a token anti-virus was good enough. See, we're improving security, we got this, see, see. A fisherman holding up a baby bass that barely replaces the bait is really not engendering much awe. If you're happy with Defender and are unconcerned about its low detection coverage then stay with it. However, as for changing the sound settings to eliminate audio alerts being a task dreadfully annoying, that is hardly the case. One checkbox, never have to revisit. Yep, that's really annoying, uh huh. I had to change configuration settings for Defender, too. OMG, oh so annoying. |
