Windows 1903 install blocked by BattlEye software
I don't know how or when the anti-cheat program BattlEye got on my
system, probably when I installed Insurgency at some point, but my upgrade to 1903 came to a grinding halt because of it. Microsoft considered my system to be completely incompatible with 1903 until it was removed. This is silliness. Who cares if some anti-cheat program stops working? Why didn't it just let me dismiss a warning and install? Why the stoppage instead? Luckily, if you have this problem, Microsoft will direct you to an uninstall program in the upgrade assistant, so you can destroy this trivial incompatibility by uninstalling BattlEye. You can also download it direct from BattlEye he https://www.battleye.com/downloads/UninstallBe.exe A note on the uninstaller. It doesn't give you any feedback. You run it, it does its thing, and it is totally silent. It doesn't give you a confirmation dialog. It doesn't even let you know if the double-click registered. But sure enough, after running it, 1903 installed without a hitch. If I may editorialize at this point, if my Bluetooth is going to stop working, I want a compatibility warning and an install stoppage. If my game *might* stop working, I think a dismissable warning message with a link to information is probably good enough, don't you? But this is what feature installs are coming to. Microsoft isn't removing incompatible programs during the install any more, it's just stopping the install until the user fixes it. This is likely thanks to users who complained about their incompatible stuff getting uninstalled by previous feature updates. I offer those people my heartfelt thanks. This is much better. -- Zag No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' ~Dan(i) Bunten |

Microsoft considered my system to be completely incompatible with 1903 until it was removed. BattleEye is not a Microsoft program. This is silliness. Who cares if some anti-cheat program stops working? Why didn't it just let me dismiss a warning and install? Why the stoppage instead? Since it always runs in the background (it's a startup program), yep, it can interfere with an OS upgrade. It's not the only one. If I may editorialize at this point, if my Bluetooth is going to stop working, I want a compatibility warning and an install stoppage. If my game *might* stop working, I think a dismissable warning message with a link to information is probably good enough, don't you? You're assuming the OS installer is intimate with how the BattleEye background program works. Microsoft probably knows of the conflict and why you got offered an uninstall path from Microsoft. It wasn't BattleEye that told you about the conflict. But this is what feature installs are coming to. Microsoft isn't removing incompatible programs during the install any more, it's just stopping the install until the user fixes it. Because removing software would be highly corruptive to the use of the computer. What if the conflict were a vertical tier commercial program used for business? The OS update would suddenly destory a company's asset, and do so intentionally. Apparently you were told what caused the conflict, so YOU decide if you want the OS upgrade or you want to keep the program which could be critical to your use of your computer. This is likely thanks to users who complained about their incompatible stuff getting uninstalled by previous feature updates. I offer those people my heartfelt thanks. This is much better. Any of the startup programs, including anti-virus, can conflict with an OS upgrade. Go into Task Manager (or use a 3rd party tool, like SysInternals AutoRuns) to disable the startup programs before doing an OS upgrade. You're the admin. You should know what is running on your computer. |

I don't know how or when the anti-cheat program BattlEye got on my system, tl;dr We know that you are in the habit of installing all sorts of crap on your Windows 10 machine to make it look, feel and sound like Windows XP so this might be one of the craps you must have installed. There is evidence that you like installing anything that is free on the net so perhaps you will leran something from this experience. Let's compare game software to commercial integration solutions. Seems perfectly reasonable. If it was eg: Bluetooth that was about to die, I would be grateful. For game software, that has a hotfix update, the installer should just remove it or update it and tell me that it did it. Throughout the history of Windows 10 feature updates, the installer has *frequently* removed incompatible programs. Even ones that work perfectly with the new OS. I *am* the admin. I expect their feature update installers (really, they're a full OS upgrade every 6 months) to stop being stupid (and *long*) or I will change up my software eventually. It's becoming a nuissance. I expect change and improvement, or I will go elsewhere. -- Zag No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' ~Dan(i) Bunten |

I already said "If the upgrade would kill my Bluetooth, I would want a warning" in my OP. IF my Bluetooth were about to die as a result of the upgrade, I'd be grateful for the warning and halting the upgrade until drivers are released. I'm not participating in a point-by-point argument for its own sake. Go away. -- Zag No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' ~Dan(i) Bunten |

You said: Luckily, if you have this problem, Microsoft will direct you to an uninstall program in the upgrade assistant, so you can destroy this trivial incompatibility by uninstalling BattlEye. Seems that complies with both your requirements to halt the upgrade of the OS as well of a warning for "Microsoft will redirect you". I'm not participating in a point-by-point argument for its own sake. Go away. "I don't do requests." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mi-lHGQCFM) You don't own Usenet. In like a pretentiosness assumption, YOU go away. |
