What is a good, thebest, antivirus? Free What you run, is a function of what kind of person you are. Are you like my buddy in one of the other groups, who double-clicked an email attachment and have Locky Ransomware destroy his computer room ? Then you'd need a belt and suspenders program. A program that sucks resources out of the computer, and needs an SSD and a hex core CPU to leave enough bandwidth for you to work. If you're clueful, then the Windows Defender in your OS is plenty good enough for casual situations. You can use sites like: https://www.av-comparatives.org/ if you like metrics and benchmarks. No product is absolutely bulletproof, and the charts can help show that. For example, heuristic detection provides a measure of zero-day protection. It attempts to spot "hooking" of computer resources by new malwares. If no virus definition exists yet, a signature analysis may miss things. Heuristic detection attempts to detect new malwares. Of course, the black hats test their viral creations with programs like that. But, they have to be careful, because in some cases, a copy of their new creation gets uploaded to a sample server and the white hats write a detection for it, before the malware has even been distributed to the wider internet. https://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-c..._201503_en.pdf In that example, Bitdefender happened to do well. There are also retroactive ("Performance") tests, which check the signature database for known malware and the detection of such. https://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-c..._201710_en.pdf Using the various PDFs from that site, you can select something to suit your purposes. Apparently, BitDefender is impossible for the people at the CIA to hack whereas just about everything else is a joke. https://www.thestar.com/business/2017/03/08/what-the-cia-thinks-of-your-antivirus-program.html |
