For win10, what is a good picture viewer that allows one to easily go to
the next picture or even have a slide show?

It would also be nice if, when rotating and saving a picture, it kept
the original also. The program below replaces the original and my
impression is that I lose size when I've done this, in XP and Vista.

In XP and Vista, iirc, when clicking on a .jpg file, the Something and
Picture Viewer would start and just by clicking on an arrow it would go
to the next picture in the directory.

But with win10, I just get a half-height, partial width bordeless box,
the right quarters of which are black. The name of the program appears
to be "Photos", and it is way inferior to Something and Picture Viewer.

There is no way to move straight to the next photo. "See all photos"
doesn't go the next one, only to a mosaic of them, and not just the
directory I'm looking at or even all its sister directories, but it
shows every directory with every .jpg file on the entire computer and I
have to hunt for set of pictures I'm trying to look at. Ugh.

Irfanview

http://www.irfanview.com/

Irfanview is the best for the average user. It can open and save dozen
of file formats, and can do color manipulations. It opens and creates
PDF files from images. With plugin does OCR

For years I used it as a front end for my scanner. I have been known to
use it as a drawing program to create floor plans for my home and church.

I have not found any thing it can not do, and it can do many things as
well as the high priced spread.

Well I guess you all agree!

It was on the last compouter but I rarely used it.

(Because I was satisfied with the default. Why does MS have something
good and then replace it with something poor? )

I've always wanted to do OCR. It's never really come up. But it might
yet.

Actually, it's not that different. To move back and forth between
pictures, move the cursor to the extreme left or right edge of the
picture and an arrow will appear, or just use the left and right arrow
keys on the keyboard. For a slideshow, click the three dots in the
upper right corner and select "Slideshow". Also, if you upgraded from
Windows 7 or 8, you might still have Windows Photo Viewer. Right-click
an image file, select "Open with" and see if it shows up.

For me, Irfanview.

I installed it and learned that this version, 4.5 won't work with win98.

Also, during installation I set to be the def. for jpg and raw, but got
a notificiation that there was a conflict and jpg was reset to Photos.

So once installed, I use Set Associations and again set jpg to this, and
it worked fine the second time. ?

Finally, when I went to dispaly a file, somehow it didn't know what the
new default was and it continued to push Photos, "Easily enhanced and
organized for you" LOL

BTW, I use FinePixViewer to look at an array of photos to find the
one(s) I want. It's very good, though the links to get prints no longer
work. It came free with my Fuji camera 11 years ago, but I found a
newer, free version on the web. If anyone is interested, I'll post
where.

Win98 ? Win10

The download page didn't list win10, but the actual installation
messages did. The same messages, a list of changes, said that win98 was
not supported. Don't throw away your old versions.

From Irfanview website http://www.irfanview.com/

What is Irfanview.

"IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for
non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows XP, 2003 , 2008, Vista,
7, 8, 10."

While I run the 32 bit version on my Windows 10 64 bit computer, if you
computer is old enough to have XP then you will probably have to run the
32 bit version.
