Win98 â‰* Win10

While it has been years since I used Windows 98, I can not say if the
current version will or will not run on W98. However the basic Irfanview
program 32bit is a small relatively simple program, that as I see it
will probably run on W 98. If you try to add the plugins there may be
some programs that will have to have XP or later.

The Irfanview exe file is only 1.6 MB. With the plugin the Irfanview
folder is 35.8 MB and plugins is 33.3MB.

I saw later that Irfan has on his site separate downloads for 32 vs 64
bit plugins, and a list of the disadvantages and advantages of 32 vs.
64. I don't have the page handy.

Irfanview for normal users

XnView for normal to advanced users

I'm pretty sure I'm not advanced and my girlfriend says I'm not normal,
so I don't know what to do.

It would also be nice if, when rotating and saving a picture, it kept
the original also. The program below replaces the original and my
impression is that I lose size when I've done this, in XP and Vista.

In XP and Vista, iirc, when clicking on a .jpg file, the Something and
Picture Viewer would start and just by clicking on an arrow it would go
to the next picture in the directory.

But with win10, I just get a half-height, partial width bordeless box,
the right quarters of which are black. The name of the program appears
to be "Photos", and it is way inferior to Something and Picture Viewer.

There is no way to move straight to the next photo. "See all photos"
doesn't go the next one, only to a mosaic of them, and not just the
directory I'm looking at or even all its sister directories, but it
shows every directory with every .jpg file on the entire computer and I
have to hunt for set of pictures I'm trying to look at. Ugh.

FastSone Image Viewer (currently V6.4, http://www.faststone.org/), just
to give you an alternative. (I see this NG is infested with IrfanView
fans. I find Irfanview a little old school, with lots of potential
(optional) baggage. FastStone is fast, small footprint, and allows you a
small number of essential image processing functions with the ability to
'contract out' to external programs like Irfanview.

Nothing wrong with Windows 7. As long as Microsoft still supports it,
people can and should be allowed to use it. The "improvements" of
Windows 10 haven't pleased everyone.

As for Windows 98... the only reason for using it, IMO, is speed. Its
requirements are minimal by today's standards and I imagine that it is
still possible to browse the web with it.

Good to know, thanks. Last time I tried FastStone it was klutz.

And there is also a portable version!

I use both Irfanview and FastStone. I like FastStone more. It just seems
a little more intuitive.

My 2 cents.

I think it's really two different things. IV is a basic
viewer and to some extent an editor. It handles anything
well and it's lightweight. Fastone is more like Picasa --
an Explorer substitute for images.

Which is better? IV will easily allow for going through
photos in a folder. FS will show them all as thumbnails
and loads them quickly.

Windows Photo Viewer works well for me, but I believe it also will save a
rotated pic (which I guess you don't want). It may be a holdover from Win 8
(or even 7), but here's how to install it:

I can't help thinking that something is lost when it was wider than it
is tall after rotating. Even though I don't know what good the bigger
but lying on its side picture is.

BTW, I found two programs that will rotate a video. I haven't used
either one yet. Davinci Reolove is 670 megs however, just the
download.. I think the other one is wlsetup and even it is 111megs.
Both are free.
