Mostly I'm worried what Windows S means and whether it's too limited in
hardware to be a basic portable or if a better deal is out there.

the main difference is it can only run apps from the microsoft store.

you can upgrade to windows 10 pro for $50, or you can get a different
product that doesn't come with windows 10s.

and whether it's too limited in
hardware to be a basic portable

that depends what you want to do with it, but it's cheap for a reason.

or if a better deal is out there.

probably.

There's a series of customer reviews on that web page.

"I was able to disable the "S" in Windows 10 in about 1 minute
(from the computer start button, you go to the microsoft store,
and select "Switch out of S mode" - seriously that easy)."

"1080p display (not anti-glare though),
i3-8130U,
backlit keyboard,
M.2 SSD,
1x free RAM slot
free 2.5" bay
no optical drive"

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us...-3-40-ghz.html

2 cores, 4 threads (Hyperthreaded)
2.2GHz (Turbo to 3.4GHz, turbo likely on one core)
Has VT-x and SLAT/EPT (could use Hyper-V, RAM is kinda small though)
Tray price $281 (HP paid *much less*)
14nm (the usual these days)

It's a $300 laptop for $300 bucks.
What's not to like.

Low profile keyboards are not always the nicest
things, but if you get a less than stellar keyboard,
this is "normal" for laptops, and not something
you can easily escape.

From a product placement perspective, this would be a
student laptop for taking notes in class perhaps (six
hour runtime). It's not for transcoding movies particularly.

The TDP is 15W, but it will likely throttle if it
gets hot. The CPU should be soldered to the motherboard
(cannot "upgrade").

The CPU is the minimum I would recommend for Windows 10.

The CPU is soldered down.
The GPU is inside the CPU.
The RAM can be upgraded.
The M.2 storage is removable (at this price, you might have expected eMMC)
Being a thin assembly, there won't be "ports" for easy access.
Lots of screws to remove to do stuff.
The battery is captive - it could be a pouch battery
(that could spell trouble if it needs a new battery).
IPS screen (good viewing angle - don't have to keep tipping the panel)
Not a matte screen finish (not for usage in a high-glare work environment).

Once you switch out of "S" mode, apparently it's Windows 10 Home effectively.
Home does not have GPEDIT. To tweak things, as a result, you might
need Regedit for that instead.

Which i3 is it? The link isn't working for me.

That's a bit tight. 8GB would be more comfortable.

Again that's small. You'll only have about 70GB usable. What tasks are you
using it for? MS office is a bit of a disk hog, but files are small. Any
kind of Adobe tasks will fill it up quickly.

Bottom line is, you always get what you pay for. It'll be fine for menial
office tasks and browsing simple websites. Don't expect the battery to last
all day.

"No Optical Drive" is NOT a type of optical drive. I would make the
effort to keep such oddities out of my webpages.

Mostly I'm worried what Windows S means and whether it's too limited in
hardware to be a basic portable or if a better deal is out there.

I almost always do my own OS installation, so would not be concerned
about a limitation of a pre-installed OS. What I would be concerned
about would be firmware limitations ("secure boot", etc...).

Thank you for finding that out as I didn't know what S mode was and my wife
already bought the laptop since she is planning to send our first born to
college and she is anal about getting everything ready (her backpack is
already being packed with emergency power devices for example).

I think it is important to permanently get out of S mode where I don't know
yet if I would need a Windows Microsoft Account to switch out of S mode?

Windows 10 in S mode FAQ
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...-in-s-mode-faq
"If you want to install an app that isn't available in the Microsoft Store,
you'll need to permanently switch out of S mode. There's no charge to
switch out of S mode, but you won't be able to turn it back on. If you're
blocked from switching and your device belongs to an organization, check
with your administrator. Your organization can choose to keep all devices
in S mode.

On your PC running Windows 10 in S mode, open
Settings Update & Security Activation.

Find the Switch to Windows 10 Home or Switch to Windows 10 Pro section,
then select the Go to the Store link.

Don't select the link under Upgrade your edition of Windows.
That's a different process that will keep you in S mode.

On the page that appears in the Microsoft Store (Switch out of S mode or a
similar page), select the Get button. After you confirm this action, you'll
be able to install apps from outside the Microsoft Store."

On StackExchange someone said to upgrade the Windows Store App first.
https://superuser.com/questions/1350...home-in-s-mode

Another question is about future proofing the laptop where I don't yet know
if you can just install Windows 10 Home if you get a new hard drive?

Cnet calls S mode a walled garden where it says that if you switch out of S
mode you can go back to S mode (at least on a "surface laptop" you can) but
I don't think anyone would want to go back to S mode anyway.
https://www.cnet.com/news/how-to-swi...nd-back-again/

I haven't found anything yet to tell me whether I can install Microsoft
Windows 10 on the hardware if I replace the SSD with a bigger hard drive.

My wife ended up getting it (she is impulsive) so I have it unopened where
this help is very informative.

I can't yet find out if it's future proof where what I would want is for
the SSD hard drive to be replaceable and for Windows 10 Home to be able to
be installed for free based on the existing Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Home
conversion & hardware configuration memory that Microsoft does nowadays.

I would assume if I put in a bigger hard drive to replace the 128GB SSD
drive that it would be automatically recognized as a replacement to Windows
10 Home but you know what happens when any of us assume things like that.

Do you know if the switch from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Home will allow a
free update to Windows 10 Home if I replace the SSD drive with a bigger
hard drive?

Spec says it uses M.2 SSD, you'd want to find out what type of notch it
has, i.e. whether it's SATA or NVMe
