I'm still using a 2006 iMac. However, I mostly run Windows on it.
I also run a monochrome Mac Clasic occasionally.

ok, that wins.

the mac classic was released nearly 30 years ago.

I agree Windows 10 is garbage. That's why I'm posting this from W2k.

win2k was good for its time. win10 is much better.

I've got one also, boots from a Rodime 20 MB hard disk, System 6.
Trackball that's basically inop, need to find a mouse for it someday.

Give Linux Mint a try, unless you have some compelling apps that will
only run on windows. For tax software, I now use the web.
You can also run windows as a virtual machine for apps you need and for
which you can't find a Linux substitute.

The hard drive has failed but it boots from an external SCSI. It also
has System 6 in ROM which can be booted with Cmd-Opt-X-O. One day I
might get the correct Torx screwdiver so I can open the case.

I also have a Umax Mac clone from when Apple allowed other companies
to make them. Again, the drive has failed but I have some spares that
I might try at some point.

W2k is still good for most stuff I do. I did have 10 on a laptop which
belonged to my brother who allowed GWX to upgrade it from 7. I had a
good look at 10 and didn't like it so reverted to 7.

You NEVER buy just one Mac...

same for windows pcs.

Because they obsolete them every year, and the replacements are
expensive...

nonsense.

Yea, that obsolete statement is idiotic. I know some folks still using
2011 and 2013 Macs. I'd still be using a 2009 iMac except it started
failing hardware wise, and wasn't economically worth fixing.

I'm still running W10 on a 2010 Dell, the specs of which have caused
it to be described as having "plenty of grunt". No hardware problems
as yet.

On the other hand I have forgotten how old my Advent laptop is. It
originally had W7, and I got W10 later. At some point Microsoft flagged
me that they needed to do a big download and it was big, it took about
five hours. No complaints so far.

Who says you can have only one OS? Dual-boot can lead to trouble, but
you can always use a VM, That's what I'm doing (Linux host with various
Windows VMs for testing and running programs that require Windows).

For tax software, I now use the web.

I don't like the idea of sending all my data to some company. "Privacy
policies" are almost meaningless, since they can change at any time.

You can also run windows as a virtual machine for apps you need and for
which you can't find a Linux substitute.

Yes. There is one Windows program I use almost all the time. It's on a
Windows 7 VM running on my main machine (Linux host).

Also, a Windows VM on a Linux host makes system backups very easy. The
whole Windows disk is a single file on the host.

They do but the external disk is about the same age, possibly older.
Having lain dormant for several years it's probably not had as much
use.

It also
has System 6 in ROM which can be booted with Cmd-Opt-X-O.

Seems to me that beyond W2k, as well as making improvements, they
incrementally add more bloat. I read this group and also places
frequented by IT professionals to see the kind of trouble people have
with Win10. I hear mostly criticism of Win10 and Microsoft's
behaviour. The difficulty or inability to configure the workings and
appearance of the OS or to remove certain software components being
examples.

What sort of cruft were you thinking of?

Yes, and I think I have fixed them by deleting Fast Boot. Apparently
this is a known problem but it took me a while before I knew it.

Perhaps some, but not a lot. And it's easy to turn most of it off.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no great difficulty or inability.
It's generally easy.
