You don't have to extract it, just open ISO with Explorer and click on
setup.exe. I just did this yesterday to do the upgrade.

BTW I also downloaded ISO using laptop running Linux. It allows
downloading ISO directly and avoiding Media Creation Tool bs.

Careful sparky.

By combining our results for this process, we learned something.

Linux, WinXP direct link download x64 == file too big for single layer DVD,
contains *11* OS SKUs on one disc

MediaCreationTool method x64 == file is 1GB smaller and fits
on a single-layer 4.7GB DVD.
Contains *7* OS SKUs on one disc

I would never have learned this, except someone reported
the size of what they got. And the two methods give
*different* media.

You can do either method... if you keep dual-layer DVDs
in the house. I don't - because the government collects
a "starving artist" tax on the dual-layer ones. The
MediaCreationTool one, is the one I burned to DVD.

How new is your hardware?

I have done a lot of updates but one older machine would not go beyond 1803

Hey Jonathan,

*Just for [my] interest sake, why do you need the upgrade now? Can't
you wait until it comes to you rather than you wasting your time trying
to force an upgrade when Microsoft's AI engine thinks your machine is
not ready yet!!!!!!!!!!.*

Except I said I didn't have to burn a dvd and installed directly from

Problem I avoided was with 1803 the MediaCreationTool kept screwing up
the ISO and after multiple times requiring multiple times downloading
the same data on a painful DLS connection only to have the setup fail
1+hour into install to go boom, MS support had me do download the above
way and finally got 1803 to install.

I had a problem getting to 1903, but I think the problem was MS had
declared the hardware too old.

Then I read MS was going to update older machines, and I was patient.
One day, a group of new updates offered. Installed all the updates, and
then 1903 was offered as an update.

But the update failed. I did a manual check for new updates, and one of
the original group of updates was offered again. I don't know why.
Again I installed the update, and this time 1903 installed.

So, I'll ask, have you done a manual check for available updates other
than 1903?

FYI, this is a Vista computer with a 2008 BIOS. :-)

It's very silly thing to do when you could have bought a new hard drive,
installed it on your old machine by first removing the existing hard
drive and then tried to do a clean install of 1809 or 1903 and it should
have worked.

Hey but it's a good idea to have people like you on this planet to keep
our IT industry thriving. Chinese are doing a good business making new
hardware for people like you.

I hope you paid somebody to take away your old machine because we don't
want it to go to some land-fill site. We have enough garbage already
and now it's affecting sharks in our seas and oceans, assuming there is
a difference between the two!!!.

Manual check for updates identifies you as a "seeker", with whatever
that entails.

Well, most of the machine I upgraded were that age or older.
