Default Thunderbird on Win10 acts differently than on Win7

I have both a Win7 and a Win10 installation of the Thunderbird news
client and would like to make the Win10 installation behave like the one
on Win7 where when I pop up a new message in its own window for reading,
it is immediately marked AS READ. It is not marked as read in the Win10
installation and for the life of me I cant find the setting option to
change that behavior. Can anybody point me to the right direction? I use
the 32-bit Thunderbird version 60.7.2 on both Windows versions.

Tools : Option : Advanced : Config Editor.

Try a search term of "Read" and see what
preferences show in the Config Editor.

The Config Editor has no undo - if you delete
an item, it is gone forever, unless you have
a second copy to use as a reference for what is
supposed to be there.

Nothing to do with Win7 vs Win10, you just have different settings on
each thunderbird instance

it is immediately marked AS READ. It is not marked as read in the Win10

If you wish to have the same things on the W10 computer as the W7
computer, copy the profile from the W7 computer to the W10 computer.

This will transfer all of you email, and you personalized settings to
the W10 machine, including the setting on reading email.

Another thing that I can't make work on the Win10 Thunderbird is the
message filters. I have the same filter set up on it as on Win7, but
somehow it does not get invoked automatically. I still displays the
posts from the offending posters. Yet the same filter works fine on
Win7. Any ideas why?

Probably the easiest mistake to make with filters, is accidentally
setting the "match all of" rather than "match any of" option with
multiple conditions.

Beyond that you should probably post a screengrab of your filter to a
hosting site to show us ...

I find it annoying to have mail marked read when I didn't do it. The
setting in Thunderbird used to be easy to find, but for some reason
that's changed. After a lot of looking I went to the config editor
(Preferences, 'advanced' tab, near the bottom) and changed the following
to false.

mailnews_mark_message_read.auto

Settings-Display-Advanced-Reading
Automatically set messages as read
then either
immediately
or after x seconds
OR just turn off automatic.

Who would ever want to do that???
(either of those settings/things)

The randomly chosen signature file that would have appeared here is more than 4
lines long. As such, it violates one or more Usenet RFCs. In order to remain
in compliance with said RFCs, the actual sig can be found at the following URL:

Whoever wants to mark messages as read immediately. Some intelligence
is required but you look like somebody who is short of that.

Not all servers will pass the MIME portion.

http://al.howardknight.net/msgid.cgi....mixmin.net%3E

If I tried that on E-S, it would likely be blocked with
an appropriate message. Only certain hierarchies permit
that (part of charter).

Switching off HTML support or the like in your
client, can stop it. You have TBird, so it can
be switched off.
