Transferring W10pro licence from retired computer.
My old defunct machine still has Win10pro installed.
I want to use a new machine instead, recently purchased. Can the licence from the defunct old machine be transferred to the new machine, and what's the best way to do it. The old defunct machine was once Windows7 but was upgraded to Win10pro, and then "refreshed" with a new iso downloaded Windows10pro. Where is the licence? Can it be done & how? |

Has the new machine got any Windows? Has it got Windows 7 pro or Home. You can upgrade to Windows 10 if the new machine came with pro or home. Of course, Win 7 pro == gets Win 10 pro and home == gets Win 10 home. I believe pro versions are always retail versions so they are transferable to new machines but I haven't tried it in practice as we only buy pro versions even from DELL. DELL business machines comes with pro licenses and they are never OEM licenses. However, you could remove the HD from the old machine and put it in the new machine and make sure it gets activated automatically. after that you can wipe the disk and reinstall Windows 10 on it and you'll get pro version on it automatically. This is only the case if the new machine still shows as activated after changing the drives. You can just try it and as they say "Nothing ventured, Nothing gained" or something like that!!. -- With over 999 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |

Has the new machine got any Windows? Has it got Windows 7 pro or Home. The new machine has no drive at all. It's a new Intel barebones NUC that will hold an SSD & an "M.2 drive". You can upgrade to Windows 10 if the new machine came with pro or home. Of course, Win 7 pro == gets Win 10 pro and home == gets Win 10 home. This is only the case if the new machine still shows as activated after changing the drives. I'll try just transferring the SSD from the old machine into the new NUC one. Do I have to consult MSoft to cancel the old licence & then issue a new one?? The old defunct machine is headed for the nearest dumpster. You can just try it and as they say "Nothing ventured, Nothing gained" or something like that!!. |

Odds are, that isn't going to work, but you can always try it. 1) Like GG says, move the disk over. Either the System control panel will says it (windows 10 Pro) is activated, or it is not activated. 2) Let's assume (1) fails. Using the interface for Activation in the Win10 settings wheel, enter the *Windows 7* key. If the Windows 7 was a Retail Boxed software, then you would have "rights to move it". Once you start using it on the new machine, you can't use it on the old machine. While the EULA may suggest you can bounce the **** out of it, if you do that too many times, the key will likely get flagged. If you move the license about once a year, it'll probably behave itself. If on the other hand, that is Dell Windows 7 or HP Windows 7, you don't have rights to move those. Those are Royalty OEM which stay with their machine. People sometimes abuse the key on the COA on those, but Microsoft knows where that key came from... Since most people buy the cheapest version they can find, of a Windows OS, there is hardly ever a "rights" working in their favor. But, you can always try it. The COA sticker (if you stuck it on the machine your own self), has the license key if you need to try Step (2). I know exactly where my COA is - I have a box with install media in it and the COAs are all in there (so they won't get scratched up). Paul |

It says... "This site canβt be reached" Is there some other way to get the info? Ignore that article. It talks about uninstalling the license from the old machine and reformatting the HD. It's rubbish advise. Ignore it completely unless you won't to lose your rights. These articles are written to generate revenues from advertisements. They are not meant to guide users correctly.
