Well, I used Everything to find kingupdater, and I thought kingupdater.1st was really .txt, so I clicked on it. It only took me to the program directory where contained an icon file, and under Type it said Irfanview ICO file. So Kingupdater appears to update irfanview! Or maybe not. Because there is a Manual subdirectory, with two pdf files with very similar names and the one I looked at is an owners manual for a Centech OBD II scan tool, for reading error codes from a car. And I did dl that, or maybe it was on the CD that came with it. (The device didn't work however and I returned it.) (There's also an entry in my start menu it says, in a CenTech directory. and there is one for kingupdater.) |

That might indicate what software you, someone else, or bundleware installed that included their updater client. |

That should have nothing to do with IrfanView. Any software that "gets loose" on your computer, could be updating unrelated folders or files. Paul |

Windows normally hides file extensions it recognizes, but actually knows what they are. Therefore what you get is often NOT what you see. So what looks like hello.ico could actually be hello.ico.exe . Windows knows you've got an executable file (only the LAST part is the extension) and executes it. I always turn off the lying option (apparently M$ wants to make it easy for malware authors). |

IOW, the .ico extension is associated with IrfanView, hence (Windows) File Explorer will say it's of Type 'Irfanview ICO file'. So, AFAICT, Kingupdater is not related to IrfanView and hence does not update it. There are many ways to confirm/debunk this, by checking the association for the .ico extension. One method is the 'Set Associations' Control Panel item. In 8.1 and probably similar in 10: Control Panel - Programs - Default Programs - Set Associations. The 'Current Default column for the 'Name' .ico will probably list IrfanView. I'm sure Paul will have a command-line command handy to verify this. ('assoc .ico' does part of it (i.e. get the file type for a given file extension), but not all of it (i.e. not the current default program handling the file extension / file type).) |

The label in the little window said Kingupdater, but the file I got to said kingupdater.exe. Sorry. So what looks like hello.ico could actually be hello.ico.exe . IOW, the .ico extension is associated with IrfanView, hence (Windows) File Explorer will say it's of Type 'Irfanview ICO file'. That would account for it. I don't remember setting an association for ..ico so this must be part of the defaults for Irfanview. Also, I don't remember ever editing in .ico file, so it didn't matter what it was associated with. So, AFAICT, Kingupdater is not related to IrfanView and hence does not update it. I'm sure you're right, because Centech (the directory it was in) is the brand of either the OBD II reader that I bought and returned or the one I bought next. If it's the one I returned, t here's no point in updating the software, or maybe it's the data**, for it. The device is in my car trunk and I'll check what brand it is. **Since new cars come out every year. I'm sure Paul will have a command-line command handy to verify this. It's a Chinese product. I think it had an updater.
