What the **** has this got to do with Windows 10 users? They are
already using Windows 10 so why should they waste time reading your crap?

Have you thought of posting this crap on Windows 7 or Windows 8
newsgroup? Even Windows XP users (or Linux junkies) can afford to waste
time reading that crap when they can't do anything useful on their
clunker. Windows 10 users are already aware of the benefits of using
the latest operating system.

You misspelled "10 million".

One thing they always leave out, is that the Firefox browser will
probably be updated for a couple more years, and that provides security
updates. Just don't use M$ stuff to access the internet.

I simply don't understand why people think that Firefox is still the
best browser around. Haven't they used anything else recently? I use
Edge as my default browser and Google chrome as my "go to browser" to
debug web pages. The good thing about Chrome is you can launch it
"InCognito" and so it gives you more control!! this is same as opening
the Edge or IE browsers in "InPrivate" window.

[ alt-no ] https://i.imgur.com/zDUkyqZ.png

You can download the Enterprise version of Chrome and change the
settings as to updates and other things which I don't bother with.
Updates is something I like to control but nothing gets updated on my
machine without me initiating the process including Windows 10!! I find
it amusing that people are still struggling with Windows 10 updates when
they could control it easily if there is a will!!

Chrome has "Legacy" extensions for IE and FF but again I don't bother
with it.

I enjoyed the comments about Microsoft catching up.

I find the timeline to simply be obnoxious, offering me nothing of value.

As for alternate desktops, useless compared to a Mac, even a 10 year old
Mac. MS sure could do better here. Maybe a Linux user will post
something, I haven't played with the alternate desktops in a Linux distro.

I have my main machine (host OS: Xubuntu) set up with 4 desktops (and
desktop switcher in the panel). It makes it easy to use multiple
programs without getting them confused.

I've used the multiple desktops option on my Mac for years! The first
year or so, I didn't understand the concept, but now I won't have a
system where the multiple desktops are not an option.

On my W7 machine, I've got Dexpot installed. I've heard Dexpot hasn't
been updated for some time, I hope that's not true. I won't be making
W10 my main Windows system.

This is off topic, but most of the live distros I've looked at just have
the 4 desktops icon on the taskbar. Does Linux limit you to 4, or can
you add more? I never seem to find the time to play with Linux and
really get into it.

From dexpot.de in the News insert:

February 15th 2016

Long time no hear! Thank you for sending in your feedback regarding
compatibility issues with Windows 10 - we're aware of them. An update
will follow.

Also, we've removed OpenCandy (displayed an ad during the installation
process) from the Dexpot installer.

OpenCandy was trivial to neuter during an install, and it wasn't around
after the install. From their downloads page:

Current Version
1.6.14 Build 2439
Last update: September 4th 2014

Operating Systems
Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1
(incl. x64 and server versions)

So, yeah, it's been nearly 5 years since their last release. v1.6 was
released back in 2012, and the minor 1.6.14 version released in 2014, so
the product has changed little since 2012. They don't list Windows 10
as supported. Looks like it's a one-man (Sebastian) or two-man
(Sebastian & Dubbert) project. They started back in 2003. Could be
they're losing interest in the project after 16 years.

Their news blurb did not point to a FAQ article on what problems Dexpot
has with Windows 10. From their forums, one problem noted by users was
that a UWP/WinRT "modern" app (those new "apps" versus Win32 "programs")
that you collapse in desktop #1 could not be restored in desktop #2, so
users had to go back to desktop #1 to restore the app's window to then
move/use in desktop #2. Some programs, like Outlook, show their window
on every desktop in Dexpot: switching desktops did not make the Outlook
window disappear (it was on all desktops). The "Assign Applications" to
a particular desktop doesn't work. The Start menu may start working
(won't open). A few problems are fixed by making sure to load Dexpot
with admin privileges. Seems Dexpot won't be usable under Windows 10
unless Sebastian gets far more motivated to work on that project. I
used Dexpot on Windows 7. Won't bother installing it on Windows 10.

Microsoft has provided an API for virtual desktops (desktop object in
Windows architecture originally used for insulating and securing the
logon screen) since Windows XP. Microsoft even had their virtual
desktop manager (Desktops) back then and is still available; see
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/desktops.
However, Microsoft can change that API or how its functions behave
anytime them want. Likely Microsoft made more changes that caused
problems for Dexpot (or any other desktop manager).

They may be losing interest, and probably not helped by the fact that
W10 has the crappy MS multiple desktops. When I looked for something
for W7, Dexpot seemed to be the best, and the most robust of the ones I
found.

Just looked at their website, no new updates to the program shows since
the 2014 update.

I need to reinstall my W7, so I may look again before I reinstall Dexpot.

I've no intention of installing any desktop software on my W10. It's
99% simply a learning platform for me, to help other users with their
systems. It will never be my main system.

I've got that installed on my XP system, and possibly my Vista but I
don't remember. But, by then I was used to what OS X could do, so I was
left suitably unimpressed.

My system (Xubuntu) defaults to 4 but seems to allow any number from 1
to 100.

1. Fast Startup
- Not available if you enable Secure Boot in the UEFI config. Fast
startup and Secure Boot are mutually exclusive. You have to give
up security for a wee bit quicker starting computer. Not sure why
anyone using an SSD for their OS/app partition needs fast startup.
Hardware-based performance boosts are the better choice.

It works for me.

- Fast startup logs you out of your Windows session, and it uses
hibernation (but the file is smaller because you're not recording
your Windows session), so fast startup is a hybrid hibernation mode
that gets you quicker to the login point; i.e., you're driving
without any traffic up to the last mile to your home but the last
mile is rush hour. Seems if you want a fast startup that you'd use
hibernation which also records your Windows session; i.e., you're
driving without any traffic up to your home.

Well, it is trying to emulate start-up, not hibernation. On start-up,
your previous session is dead, obviously.

- With fast startup enable, Windows locks down the disk. You cannot
access it, say, via dual-boot from other operating systems.
Booting into another OS and modifying anything on the fast started
disk can cause corruption. If dual/multi-booting, don't use fast
startup.

Obvious, same as with full hibernation. But it is not "Windows locks
down the disk". Windows simply marks the disk as "in use", and other
operating systems notice it and react by refusing to access it in write
mode.

- On some systems, the BIOS/UEFI settings are inaccessible when you
"shutdown" the computer using fast startup mode.

Same as in hibernation. At least my UEFI laptop does that when
hibernating Linux. Intentional feature. If you modify the settings the
hibernated system may crash on restore.

8. Security
- Mentions the Secure Boot mode if you're using a UEFI computer and
it is enabled there. Note: As mentioned above, Secure Boot and
Fast Startup modes are mutually exclusive.

Not here.
