How new is the notebook? Maybe 98 is having a problem with the hardware. If the notebook came with
XP I would put it back the way it was and use Virtual PC from Microsoft its free and you can put
many different OS's on it.

the notebook is almost 7 years old. it is still a windows xp notebook
though.
i fixed the error. i just had to crash the install and reformat the disk
from another pc.
the 98se installation formated it wrong.
the partition paramiters were wrong, which caused the install to freeze.
reformating the disk with another pc fixed the issue.
i got everything working the way i want it to be working now.
