Hotfix Effective Rx to SP1 Memory Slowing?
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=815411
MS generated the above KB recently titled Programs Run Slower (Up to 10X) After You Install Windows XP SP1 Articles on the slowing are like the two linked below: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=0...thread&tid=201 http://www.vnunet.com/News/1139809 Several articles have recently reported that applying SP1 to XP can cause changes to memory handling code resulting in programs allocating memory and that are graphics driven and CPU intensive taking 10 X longer to start. MS has KB 815411 on this problem, and is offering a hotfix that is a work in progress or a "Beta hotfix" to improve the memory situation imposed by SP1. It is targeted to be included in the next SP. Has anyone any experience with it that has produced significant improvement in memory allocation or graphics programs operating--or has anyone seen any bug reports? I have been using it for a couple days and it seems to be helping--will know more after about a week. The KB says: SYMPTOMS After you install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), your programs may take as much as ten times as long to start. CAUSE This problem may occur if the programs you run frequently allocate and deallocate large blocks of memory. Changes in Windows XP SP1 in the memory management system have caused this operation to take significantly longer than with pre-SP1 Windows XP. RESOLUTION A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this fix. Interested in experiences with the patch: significant improvement or not and bugs since it is contexted as a "beta hotfix" or a hotfix in progress. Thanks, Chad Harris |
