Default mm1 vs. mm2

I was able to MPEG encode my movies via a free downloaded
program and then burn them with Roxio and play them on
all of my DVD players (they were burned to CD-RWs.)
With MM 2, my MPEG encoding program no longer accepts my
movies----hence they can only be played on a computer
with Windows Video Player. If MM 1 was not such a clunky
program, I would be tempted to go back it. Is there an
answer to this problem????? Thanks for any help you can
give me.
