Default TMPGEnc Stream Type - mpeg 1 or 2?

If I change video stream type from mpeg 1 to mpeg 2, media player 9 will not
recognize the output file (codec problem). Since mpeg 2 is the DVD standard
and eventual output of my video will be to DVD do I change it? If I output
to mpeg 2, I'll have to get updated codecs for Windows Media Player 9 and
Movie Maker 2 (can someone tell me specifically which ones to get - &
where?) Do changing the codec lower the chances that a home DVD player will
not recognized this burned DVD?

thanks,
-Rob

Irrespective of codec used, as long as you stick to established DVD
standards for MPEG-2 encoding you should have no problems. However,
re-encoding MPEG layer 1 to MPEG-2 will do absolutely nothing towards
improving quality; assuming source mpg1 = 352x240 @ 1150kbps (Vcd standard).

Mpg 2 codecs are found everywhere, including bundled software provided with
DVD writers/ players, video capture display cards, and related hardware.
However, I would seriously recommend doing your homework before final
purchase decision; check published reviews, comparisons, and known issues,
through related google searches, dedicated newsgroups and special interest
groups (SIGs).

Note: Some of the more popular codecs cannot be installed, removed/
re-installed, or moved to a newer systems without internet-only product
activation from the vendor. In many cases, sales, acquisition, support, and
payment is only available through internet access; i.e. Pay-Pal, etc., and
email.

I personally prefer standalone encoder/authoring products from reputable
vendors with telephone sales, order, payment, and support, as all of my own
proccessing is done on a dedicated system, not connected, and never will
be.:-)
