Whoever recommended Agent Ransack for file searching, thanks
I know it was recommended, but I can't find the thread. As I recall,
it was in the Windows 7 group, but I would use it in 8 as well. It's working great so far. Love being able to find stuff. The only momentary annoyance was being reminded that it's not for business use, but that's nothing. -- Just thanks, not for discussion. I don't sell anything. |

And FileLocator Lite is a rebranding of Agent Ransack for corporate environments. It has exactly the same functionality but with a different name and logo. wrote... Agent Ransack does that. You can search for text within a file. I started using it because with XP the search was undependable and no longer able to look inside CAB files. (CABs have the content file list stored as plain text, so using Agent Ransack is an easy way to look for files among multiple CABs.) What else do you want to look for? If you need some sort of metadata then getting at it would depend on the file type. |

Agent Ransack *does* search for file content. |

I just used Agent Ransack to search for specific text in both of those file types and found it. Quickly. I have no Outlook e-mails to test. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

For instance, a Word .doc will have text in the file. Likewise, a .JPG could have tags that are present as text. But a .docx is actually a ZIP file with a number of other files inside. I doubt AR will find that text. I doubt any program will do that unless it's specifically designed for a given file type. To find text inside a .docx would require knowledge of the file structure. The contents are compressed, so the text is not there in the actual bytes of the .docx. |

It did find text in Excel files but did not in Outlook messages. (I am using Office 2007.) I made sure that the whole C:\ drive and subdirectories were serached and, yes, my Outlook messages are stored on the C:\ drive. Is there some setting that I am missing for successful Outlook searches? -- tb |
